Cigar Selection

Sancho Panza Molinos (Cuba)

Few singles smoked with good friends. This particular box was brought back from Cuba by a guest. Code on the box indicated ISU-VC-2 (Feb 98). We had a little cigar crawl this summer. Among the victims were RyJ Churchills, Punch Double Corona, San Luis Rey Serie A, Arturo Fuente Canones and this Sancho Panza. All those cigars were relatively young - less than a year. We had a great time.

size : 6 1/2 " * 42
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Light brown, some imperfection on wrapper. No smell at cold.
1.5/2 points
Smoking it : Good lighting, excellent burning, perfect draw. At first this cigar is a bit agressive. But as burning continues it appears to be character. A lot of fine spicy aromas.
3/3 points
Second part is very tasty, delightful. Spicy aromas are turning to sweeter flavors. Perfect balance between taste and power.
3/3 points
The finish is grandiose. Never too strong or too flat, this Sancho is fresh all the way. Sorry I had to put it away !
2/2 points

Total points : 9.5/10
General comments : No doubt an excellent cigar. Well built and perfectly balanced, Sancho Panza has enough to please all aficionados.

Montecristo No. 3 (Cuba)

Few singles smoked with my friend Francois. This box of Montecristo was bought in Roissy Airport - France. Code shows Mars 1998 date of production.

size : 5 1/2" * 42
Wrapper, appearance and construction : brown oily wrapper, some veins. Few imperfection.
1/2 points
Smoking it : Easy lighting, good burning. This Monte is young, green and delicate. Spicy aromas such as pepper are very much distinctive.
2.5/3 points
Hard body of this cigar shows power and linearity. Drawing is perfect. Wonderful smell coming out this Monte.
2.5/3 points
Last third is obviously more interesting but never complex. Spicy flavor is turning into toasted aromas. Long finish, good aftertaste. 1.5/2 points

Total points : 7.5/10
General comments : Montecristo is one of the largest Habana producers. No.3 suffers in someway by this overproduction. This corona could be boring on regular basis. I recommend this one for beginners.

Padron Ambassador Maduro (Nicaragua)

A box received from my friend Rich. Very nice varnished box of 25. Unfortunately all cigars are in cellophane.

size : 6 7/8" * 42
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Reddish black, oily wrapper. Great smell at cold. Very regular.
2/2 points
Smoking it : Quick lighting, perfect burning, excellent draw. First puff is surprising. Is this cigar non flavored ?? Seems to me like a strong menthol flavor, sweet aromas. Extra fresh sensation. I love it !!
3/3 points
Body develops spicy flavors with a lot of sweetness. Smell is amazing. This smoke can be confusing but still very pleasant.
2/3 points
Last part shows constancy in construction. Burning is really perfect, flavors are very distinctive. Long finish, beautiful after taste in mouth.
2/2 points

Total points : 9/10
General comments : For all my readers and friends I must admit : you were right about Padron. Not only I liked this smoke but I enjoyed it very much. Mitch (terrible tornado) has certainly cost some damages to Padron but I hope they will continue to produce more premium cigars.

Padron Churchill Maduro (Nicaragua)

Another box of 25 sent by my good friend Rich. Same as for the Ambassador.

size : 6" 7/8* 46
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Black, massive, impressive with oily wrapper. No apparent veins. A super fresh smell...
2/2 points
Smoking it : like the Ambassador this Churchill has a perfect construction. Medium mild cigar. More character than the Ambassador. Woody flavors mixed with flower.
3/3 points
Being less sweet than the Ambassador I believe this Padron is also more complex. A strong character melted with extra-freshness gives a relaxing impression. Woody flavors are moving to sweeter aromas toward begining of last third.
3/3 points
Long finish. Very solid and consistant cigar. I did not leave much of this long smoke that left me a wonderful aftertaste.
2/2 points

Total points :10/10
General comments : Bingo!! Another winner. More mature than the Ambassador this Padron is trully a very good cigar. This maduro has its place in my personal humidor among the best Cubans. Thank you Rich!!

Opus X Robusto (Dominican)

Few singles from Rich (yes! Again). Beautiful piece. Looks very much like a Cuban except this ugly cellophane. Band is a beauty that I will keep in my cigar book.

size : 5" 1/4 * 50
Wrapper, appearance and construction : dark brown oily wrapper, very regular. Few veins. Light smell at cold.
2/2 points
Smoking it : long lighting, good burning and medium drawing. Medium to full body upon start. Drawing is not flowing. Great earthy flavors with a hint of caramel.
2.5/3 points
2 part has better drawing as cigar gets hot. Full body now with very similar flavors, no big evolution in aromas. A bit flat.
2.5/3 points
Ending is short for a Robusto. I expected a change of character toward the finish. A lack of constancy but all in all a good smoke.
1.5/2 points

Total points : 8.5/10
General comments : A bit disapointed after 2 Opus X Robusto. I heard so much about this one that I was expecting the best cigar ever...But after all I would gladly smoke one Opus X a day !!
