Morro Castle Torpedo (Nicaragua)

Bought in November 97 from CigarExpress. A box of 25 cigars. Wood box with plexi slide on top. Stored in large humidor since.

size : 6 1/2 " * 54
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Slightly oily dark brown wrapper, looks rough and irregular, heavy veins.
1.5/2 points
Smoking it : Easy lighting, too-easy draw, great burning. Light aromas on start.
2.5/3 points
On 2nd third the cigar seem spongy as it gets hotter. Burning is still good. A lot of smoke comes out this stick.
2/3 points
Finish is dry. The cigar is "sweating" on the end. Smoke is burning my eyes.
1/2 points

Total points : 7/10
General comments : An outdoor smoke for sure!! Looks rough but pleasant smoke. Solid construction. The truth is that my first one was terrible, but since then all new smokes were good.

Lars Tetens Brief XTC (USA)

Received in January 98 from Lars himself. Along the full lign including an aluminium cigar box with built-in humidifier.

size : 6" * 50
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Oily dark brown wrapper, great sheen, incredible smell.
2/2 points
Smoking it : Easy lighting, perfect draw, even burning. Knocking aromas from start.
3/3 points
2nd third is very powerfull even agressive. Burning is still perfect. What a construction!!!
3/3 points
Finish is good. The cigar is very soft and seems to be "sweating" with the heat. Great smell even on the end.
1.5/2 points

Total points : 9.5/10
General comments : Or you love it or you hate it!! No in-between. Eventhough smoking a Lars is like smoking incens, I felt in love with the stick. Brief XTC is my favorite along Lars. Surely one of the best I had in a long long time. Try it, but do not expect to smoke a R&J. Very different from all you know.

Petrus Oro Negro Rothschild (Honduras)

Samples sent to me by Felipe Gregorio. Petrus Oro Negro is made in Honduras using Honduran binder and tobacco (a Puro). I kept it 5 weeks in my humidor before tasting.

size : 4 3/4" 50
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Black solid color (extra Maduro), shiny oily wrapper, looks amazing.
2/2 points
Smoking it : Good lighting, easy draw, even burning. Licorice taste as my tongue makes contact with wrapper.
3/3 points
2nd third is sweet but also full bodied. A lot of character for this Maduro. Not harsh. Excellent construction.
3/3 points
Last part comes too quick as this short robusto melts in my mouth. Sweet aromas are still around. Lovely smell that seduced my wife. Burning fingers !!!!
2/2 points

Total points : 10/10
General comments : Wow!! My second 10 pts and certainly the best one! So sweet you might think its a Lars. It was an enthusiastic experience. All ingredients for a good cigars are compacted in this one : great look, excellent construction, flavors and aromas all around. The best part is the price ($3.5). For sweet cigar lovers only !!

Petrus No.2 (Honduras)

Samples sent to me by Felipe Gregorio. Petrus is made in Santa Rosa (Honduras) using Honduran filler and binder but Ecuadorian wrapper. I kept it 5 weeks in my humidor before tasting.

size : 6 1/4" * 44
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Light colorado color, appareant white veins on wrapper. Almost no smell.
1/2 points
Smoking it : Easy lighting, good draw, even burning. Mild bodied cigar. Spicy aromas but lack of character.
2/3 points
I am afraid to be bored by those typical Dominican built in flavors. Some spices and herbal aromas with no specific interest. One thing this cigar has : perfect construction. Burning is equal and drawing easy.
2/3 points
Last part is not different. I find the No.2 to be a morning cigar (not usual for a long corona). Not to strong, not to mild.
1/2 points
Total points : 6/10
General comments : A little disapointed from this Petrus. Last week I was so enthousiast about the Maduro that I expected more for this stogy. But afterall its a fair smoke for beginners.

Puros Indios Especiales No.4 (Honduras)

A box of 25 bought at Cigar Express in November 97. Puros Indios are made in Danli (Honduras) using an Ecuadorian wrapper and binder. Filler is a total blend between Brazil, Dominican, Jamaican and Nicaraguan tobacco.

size : 5 1/2" 44
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Dark brown color but not maduro, oily wrapper, some irregularities on wrapper. Flashy green band (not my taste) but beautifull box.
1.5/2 points
Smoking it : Good lighting, easy draw, even burning. Sweet aromas on lighting followed by herbal flavors. A lot of character for this small cigar. I'm surprised by the richness.
3/3 points
2nd third is creamy. I like the sweet aromas turning around in my mouth. Medium bodied with strong flavors. Some problem in burning.
2.5/3 points
Last part is interesting although burning problems are bothering me. Herbal aromas are taking over the sweetness. Long lasting finish. Very good.
1.5/2 points
Total points : 8.5/10
General comments : For the one who knows me, its a surprise!! I usually don't smoke small sized cigar. Not because I'm narrow minded but simply because I find larger cigars to be more complex as they burn. But this one hit me from the beginning. Rolando Reyes has certainly a secret in his blending !! Cannot wait to try the Toro Especiales.

Lars Tetens Churchill (USA)

Received in January 98 from Lars himself. Along the full lign including an aluminium cigar box with built-in humidifier. There is a legend going on about Lars that he is using pre-embargo cuban tobacco in the filler. I think its BS simply because working on a 30 years tobacco leaf is impossible. But you know what they say : business is bus...

size : 8" * 50
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Deep brown wrapper (maduro?), beautiful sheen, oily wrapper. Unusual uncut foot. Most of my books say that Lars Churchill is 7 3/4" * 46 but this one is obviously much larger. The notice along with the cigars says : "All sizes are approximate, inconsistency guaranteed.".
2/2 points
Smoking it : Easy lighting, excellent draw, even burning. Full bodied cigar. Incense flavors with lavander aftertaste.
2/3 points
2nd third is similar to the 4th of July : explosive. Spicy, fruity, creamy and certainly floral. So rich it gave me headache at some point. Burning and drawing are perfect. Over flavored cigar.
2/3 points
3rd part of this long cigar is more quiet. Maybe I got used to strong flavors. Extra long afertaste with dry finish on palate.
1.5/2 points
Total points : 7.5/10
General comments : The only way to understand Lars is to smoke a Lars. Most of anti-lars people would say he is a sentimental hippie from the '90s. I simply enjoy a Lars from time to time. They are well made cigars that are better short than long (in my own opinion!).

El Rico Habano "Habano Club" (USA)

A gift from an American friend.

size : 4 7/8" * 48
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Ecuador/Nicaragua wrapper, Nicaragua binder and DR filler. Nice dark EMS wrapper, same tone as Cuban Partagas Lusitanias.
2/2 points
Smoking it : Cold cigar smells earthy and some sweet aromas, too. Easy lighting, equal burning, good draw. A full bodied impression right from the start.
3/3 points
Upcoming dominating earthy tones. Wonderfull draw. Medium gray ashes, small black ring.
2/3 points
Last third: Very full, strong, still aromas of earthy and herbal kind.
1.5/2 points

Total points : 8.5/10
General comments : I was surprised to find a cigar looking very Cuban and the construction is superior and well done. I kept the bands, which are pretty and kind of old-style work and look like a mixture of La Gloria Cubana and Saint Luis Rey.

La Gloria Cubana Double Corona (USA)

A box of 25 bought over the 'net in Sep '97. Very clean presentation. All cigars are cellophaned. Stored in large humidor since.

size : 8" * 52
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Colorado claro wrapper, some white veins. Develops good aromas at cold. A massive cigar, well presented.
2/2 points
Smoking it : Lighting is a little long considering the size of this giant. Burning is excellent and drawing amazingly perfect. Medium bodied on start. Sweet aromas, soft.
2.5/3 points
On 2nd part - about 1/2 hour later- sweet aromas are strongly vibrating. Hints of cocoa and coffee. Very pleasant smoke, still medium character.
2.5/3 points
Last hour of smoking this indeed very good cigar develops hints of caramel and vanilla. Some strenght toward the end but still a very classic medium bodied smoke. Very long after taste.
2/2 points

Total points : 9/10
General comments : Obviously not a cuban, but still a very good cigar. I was surprised by quality and taste. Those were two weaknesses of non cuban 'till few years ago. LGC is a winner in most sizes. The ecuadorian wrapper is a little wonder. A must try !!

Puros Indios Toro Especial (Honduras)

A box of 25 bought at Two Guys in Boston (USA). Cigars are cello packed. Hard wood box. Awful band (green and red)

size : 6" * 53
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Colorado Claro wrapper. Dry thick wrapper, veiny. Looks rought and massive.
1.5/2 points
Smoking it : Easy and quick lighting, regular burning and perfect drawing. Smoother and milder than its look. Lack of aromas in the first part.
2/3 points
On the second part this large Robusto begins to develop some sweet aromas. Something between caramel and sweet spices. Burning is really excellent. Well built.
2/3 points
On the last part of this Puros Indios I start to enjoy the sweet aromas becoming more distinctive. Toffee flavor although alterate by the cello that gives a plastic aftertaste. In my opinion cellophane should be banned in the cigar industry.
1.5/2 points

Total points : 7/10
General comments : Not the best Puros Indios I have smoked. Rolando Reyes will have to work on finess. Wrapper was too thick and tobacco not blended in the habbit of those great No4 Especiales.

Felipe Gregorio Sereno (Honduras)

A carton package of 5 sent to me by Felipe Gregorio Inc for review. Cello packed (ARGHHH!!).

size : 5" 3/4* 42
Wrapper, appearance and construction : Colorado maduro wrapper. Oily shiny wrapper. No apparent veins. Sweet perfume at cold.
2/2 points
Smoking it : Lighting is good, burning and drawing regular. Medium bodied character. Roasty flavors from first puff. Creamy.
2.5/3 points
At mid this Honduran develops very pleasant roasted nut-coffee beans aromas. Burning is a little irregular and needs a quick relighting.
2/3 points
Last part is a bit irregular with some sour flavor hints. But quickly overcome by roasty aromas still hanging 'till the end.
1.5/2 points

Total points : 8/10
General comments : This brand deserves some credit. Nothing was forgotten in this cigar : good presentation, good construction, good aromas. Price can be a major drawback for Sereno (over $7/stick?!). Watch out not too lose your smokers, Felipe.
