The sexy, urban drama of “Honey” just doesn’t seem real enough for the Hunts Point area of the Bronx that it is centered in.
Jessica Alba’s character, Honey, grew up in this neighborhood and for some reason she was shocked by the things she saw. I wasn’t even shocked and I spend roughly 25 percent of my time in the Bronx and found this image as a nice reflection of the true problems going on.
Everything was just too nice in this drama. Honey was faced with the dilemma of walking away from the area she grew up and turning her back on a bunch of kids who she taught hip hop to in the local community center.
Has anyone looked at Alba’s face? She looks to sweet and innocent right from the start of the movie, when she is gleaming from just serving patrons a couple of beers. The audience knew too well that there is no way Alba would ever make the wrong choice.
The problems that Honey faces just don’t seem all that difficult as they are definitely the same issues seen in countless movies before hand. It even has the show put on at the end of the movie with her disapproving mother coming in to see the show and then finally accepting this as what Honey is going to do in life. Before that all her mother wanted was for Honey to get out of that neighborhood. I know I have heard this before.
Alba and Mekhi Phiffer have a good screen presence together, but I didn’t find this to be the best vehicle for Alba. While it did show off her body and no one can say she is not beautiful she didn’t have the right attitude as someone living in the hood.
Lil’ Romeo showed he also has a face for movies, but he also is too nice to see him make the wrong choices. It seemed the casting agents went around to try and find the sweetest faces so that no one would question what choices they would make.
The best part of this movie was Missy Elliot playing herself. She proved to be a good entertainer and wasn’t timid or shy in doing her part as many times music stars can’t make the cross over to movies. Even in the small role she had, I found myself remembering her part as the stand out in the movie.
