Interim Reports

A set of eight interim report cards designed for a class assignment; these reports demonstrate a growth with respect to the knowledge of teaching software (they were generated with Markbook).  Developing a familiarity with the software that one will need to use is an important step in a teacher's professional development.  The students in these reports are fictitious.  Resemblance of the names, grades, and other information included in them, to any person, living or deceased, is purely coincidental.

Aside from being important from the standpoint of familiarity with the software, this exercise demonstrates an assessment tool which is very important in our society:  the report card.  But why is it that report cards are such an important part of our school system?  It essentially boils down to feedback to our students and to their parents.  In short, it is a form of communicating to our students, and to their parents, how well (or how poorly) the student is progressing.  Bakhtin's assertions on the importance of the language we use relate well to this activity.  Caution is important in preparing report cards.  A comment which the teacher regards as being appropriate may not be viewed in the same way by the parent -- who has interpreted it in a different way than what the teacher had intended, as Bakhtin (p. 294) said:  "language is not a neutral medium that passes freely and easily into the private property of the speaker's intentions; it is populated -- and overpopulated -- with the intentions of others. Expropriating it, forcing it to submit to one's own intentions and accents, is a difficult and complex process."  Gilbert, Osborne, and Fensham (p. 56) discuss bringing students to the point of having a "coherent scientific perspective."  Report cards work in something the same way, trying to bring the parents to have a coherent perspective of their child's progress in science (or other subject matter).  In addition, the interim report gives the student feedback on how he (or she) is progressing; and on what he (or she) can do to improve on the work that has been done.

Reports are an important part of the educational system, for reasons already described, and the inclusions below are an example of how this tool can be generated using the Markbook software, which is used in most Ontario high schools.
