               Episode # 3 - Journey to the Duelist Kingdom

 

          Joey receives a letter and a video tape from his sister, Serenity.  She was born with very poor sight and could go blind very soon.  Joey loves her very much and decides to go to the Duelist Kingdom to battle and win the two million dollar prize. With this money, he could then pay for a surgery that will help her see again.  He tries to keep this a secret from Yugi and his other friends ashamed to ask for help.  So it was set, Yugi and Joey were now going to both enter the Duelist Kingdom competition and win for their loved ones.  However, Joey couldn't board the ship leaving to the Duelist Kingdom because he wasn't invited.  Yugi gives Joey a star chip so he can board. They are both at a disadvantage because they both only have one star chip while everyone else has two.  Tea and Tristan also board the ship by taking the sneaky approach.  They hide in the cargo and wait so they can cheer Yugi and Joey on at the island.  Later that evening, Mai Valentine complains about her room and battles Rex Raptor for his room.  She seems to be able to tell what card she will pick from her deck.  Mai wins and Rex is kick out of his room.  Meanwhile, Joey and Yugi are trading with other duelist to try and strengthen their decks.  Weevil asked Yugi permission to see his legendary Exodia cards.  Immediately he threw the cards overboard and into the ocean.  Joey, wanting to repay Yugi for his help, jumped in to try to retrieve the pieces but could only get 2.  Yugi dives after him as he starts to drown.  Tea and Tristan come out of their hiding places help their friends back into the boat.  He explains about how he is trying to help his sister.  The friends understand and agree to help him.  Yugi remembers how Joey and Tristan used to pick on him.  Yugi stood up for them and they became friends.  Yugi gives Joey a Time Wizard card, saying it will fit nicely in his deck.  They begin to talk strategy about the tournament.  The next day, the group arrives at the Duelist Kingdom.

Episode Rating (1-10): 6.  The only good part about this episode was the character development.  We learned things about Yugi and Joey's past.  We also found out that Weevil is a cheater and Mai is a good duelist.  There was no duel though and it seemed a little slow.
