Head to Head
When meeting the enemy head on, NEVER turn and have you tail pipes exposed to his incoming missle. Always face the missle and deviate from it at 30- 35 degrees at speeds of more than 500 mph.
Setting up for the fight.
At 10 miles from target drop your fuel tanks, put down your flaps to help keep speed in turns. select aim-9 sidewinder. At 6 miles when you get a lock on target LAUNCH aim-9 sidewinder. This will either kill him or make him start avoiding. If they chose to live and avoid and start tracking at 30 -35 degrees to avoid, send a second aim-9 to keep him avoiding. If he launches on you Switch to guns EEGS. (Always make sure you keep an aim-9 sidewinder to use as backup in case your radar gets shot out.) And then start your 30 - 35 degree avoidance. Once missle passes you check distance to target. If he is still closing and has not passed you, get another aim-9 on him. Once he has passed use hard rudder to get the nose of aircraft around, keep your wings at about 45 degrees to his turning, this will maximise rudder and elevators in turn using both to change attitude. This time when he is passed and you are turning on him there is little chance a missle will work effectivly so dont waste them... rely on guns to get him.(effective gun range .45 miles but you can still shred at 1 mile with a little practice) You should now be on his 6 stay on him and match him move for move, Watch out for exhaust trails (spent air) this will cause your engines to "choke" and you will loose power.
If he is still turning, continue with hard rudder in the direction of turn, keeping the wings at about 45 degrees to his flight path, you will slowly gain on him. At this piont you need to relax and let you 20mm guns do the talking. A tense pilot will jerk the trigger and you will spray.. RELAX when the cross aproaches him relax and squeeze, let the guns roll and as you go of target cease fire till he comes around again. If you have to "peck" at him..wreck his airframe and engines bit by bit if needed...its hard to get a steady stream of rounds going in and most of the time its just one or two rounds that hit. so "peck" away and stay on his 6, sooner or later there will be sufficeint airframe damage to where he will not be able to turn as quickly as you....at that point you can get a steady stream of 20mm round at him.
