Constantly holding the main sheet makes things inconvenient.   I added a jam cleat made of PVC pipe to free up the hands for important stuff like taking a cup of coffee and lighting the pipe.
Rudder before painting with the lead insert showing at the bottom of the rudder.   This is unpainted with the push-pull tiller arrangement.
Here's a closeup after painting that shows the new hinge arrangement.  Eyelets with a steel rod for the pintle.  It works better than anything I have tried so far and is easy to mount and dismount from the stern.  A wooden piece on the lower right of the upper rudder mount stops the blade from swinging too far forward
Here's the rudder in the up position with the final steering linkages shown.  In this pictue the rear storage-flotation chamber can be seen with the hatch installed.  More on that later.
