Necronomicon

"...the dreaded NECRONOMICON has finally surfaced. Written in Damascus in the Eight Century A.D. by the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, the accursed volume is filled with myths and rituals that have survived the darkest days of magic and occultism-- long-forgotten formulae for evoking incredible things, beings, and monsters into physical appearance..."

Necronomicon. Sounds like something about some dead stuff, right? Well, that’s pretty close. The Greek translation of the Necronomicon means Book of the Practices of the Dead. Necro meaning dead, nomos meaning practices. It’s definitely Greek, not Latin. The Necronomicon was supposedly written by the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, Lovecraft’s pseudonym. The Necronomicon did exist, however, it was known as the "Al Azif," but later translated to it’s common Greek name of Necronomicon, which has lasted over many centuries.

What exactly is the Necronomicon about?

Arabian mythology points out that there are many secrets hidden deep within the earth and human spirits that should not be known to man. However, through the tales and recollection of Abdul Alhazred, the book exposes to man the secrets of a power so evil it could destroy the world if in the wrong hands. The Necronomicon is one of the most feared Black Books in the world. With history of the deities and Elder Ones, to summoning rituals, spells, and exorcisms, the Necronomicon is definitely not something to take lightly.

The Elder Ones? Huh?

"Nor is it to be thought, that man is either the oldest or the last of Earth's masters, or that the common bulk of life and substance walks alone. The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, the Old Ones shall be not in the spaces we know but between them, They walk serene and primal undimensioned and to us unseen. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He Knows where the Old Ones broke Through of old, and Where They shall break through again. He knows where They have trod earth's fields, and where They still tread them, and why no man can behold Them as They tread. By their smell can men sometimes know them near, but of their semblance can no man know, saving only in the featurs of those They have begotten on mankind; and of those are there many sorts, differing in likeness from mans truest eidolon to that shape without sight or substance which is Them. They walk unseen and foul in lonely places where the Words have been spoken and the Rights howled through at their seasons...Yog-Sothoth is the key to the gate whereby the spheres meet. Man rule now where They rule once; They shall soon rule where man rule now. After summer is winter, after winter summer. They wait patient and potent, for here they shall reign again."
[Quote from The Dunwhich Horror]

Azathoth is closely related to the theory of quantum physics because the entity is the "ultimate nuclear chaos at the center of infinity,"(The H.P. Lovecraft Companion). Yog-Sothoth, however, is more of an all in one, one in all type of power, whereas Azathoth was the Lord of All.

Aside from the Old Ones, there are the Other Ones. More solid deities than powerful entities. Nyarlathotep is the mighty messenger, similar to that of the common Greek and Latin God Hermes/Mercury. Shub-Niggurath is the Black Goat of the Woods and is the fertility god.

Other important names to know are:

Cthulhu – Lord of the Abyss. The name itself (KUTULU) translates into the Lord of the Abyss, and shows similarities to that of TAIMAT.

Shaitan – Shaitan Leviathan is The Dragon (this information can be found in the Quran.) Leviathan is found in Loten, and Loten is Teiten, and even more so, Teiten is Taimat. Ergo, Shaitan Leviathan is Taimat, and vice versa. Just thought that was rather interesting.
