Philosophy

The Interpreter Services Office at Austin Community College believes in and fosters the concept of equal access to communication and information for deaf /hard of hearing students, staff and faculty.

Interpreter Services Department

The department is comprised of an Interpreter Supervisor, a Lead Interpreter, 5 half-time staff interpreters and approximately 80 hourly interpreters.  We provide interpreting services for classes, student-teacher meetings, counselor-student meetings, campus activities, and special events at any of the ACC's 7 main and over 30 satellite campuses.  There are on average, 55 deaf students enrolled here at ACC. IS offers:

  • interpreter services to students, staff and faculty at ACC
  • a mentorship program for interpreters wanting to be either a mentor or a protégé
  • opportunities for interpreters to learn, grow and be part of a team
  • training opportunities for interpreters

What do interpreters do?

The interpreter plays a critical role in the success of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.  In addition to providing the communication link for these students in their classes, interpreters make it possible for them to access other school activities and services.  The intent of this Interpreter Handbook is to provide guidelines, clarify expectations and responsibilities of the interpreter, and give a basic understanding of some of the objectives, policies and procedures of ACC’s Office of Interpreter Services.  If you do not understand any of the material or if questions come up that are not covered in the Interpreter Handbook, do not hesitate to contact Interpreter Services (IS).  From time to time it may be necessary to update sections of the Interpreter Handbook.  Copies of updated sections will be made available to all hourly and staff interpreters.  You will find more detailed information about the college, its organizational structure and policies in ACC’s Hourly Employee Handbook, which is available from IS or Human Resources.

 

Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD)

Each main campus has an OSD office.  OSD serves as a resource to staff, faculty and students who are disabled and in need of services.  If a student needs accommodations i.e. interpreter services, note takers, etc. they need to contact one of the OSD offices.  If a teacher has a student with a disability and needs to talk with someone about the student then they also should contact an OSD office.   For more info regarding OSD visit their website.
