   A.S. Vice-President of Business

 Name:  Mohammad Naim
 Age:  20
 Major:  Business/Economics
Interests:  Philosophy, Corporate law and Investment Banking

What are you planning to do while in office?
Serve the students as one of the most proactive, informed, politically right and socially aware Vice-President in the history of Mt. SAC.  Some of my ambitions, proactive and impressive plans are to get the Sunshine Ordinance passed in Associated Students, Mt. SAC Board of Trustees, Walnut City Council and hopefully incorporate it into the LA County ordinances.  Another of my projects is the "Evening with higher Education" - to host a night with the student governments of UCLA, USC, Cal Poly Pomona, and CSU Fullerton.

Also support Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort by organizing a taskforce comprising of different organizations on campus. I have planned out Business Speaker Seminar, Science and Religion: Their Commonality, bring on campus California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to address issues related to students at Community College and Assemblyman Bob Huff to support student rights at state level and other events that will increase social, economically and political awareness.

There are so many social events like Battle of the Bands, Social Justice Workshops, and other more interesting activities and events on campus. I also plan on challenging many school policies on campus like Grading issues, Safety issues, Book prices, Teacher evaluation being open to students, and Measure R which have left students stunned and disappointed in the college governance. I will work hard to resolve and bring more student awareness on these issues. I plan on working with other organization on campus to help with their issues and hopefully resolve them.

What do you see as the biggest issue on campus, and how do you plan to address it?

Some of the biggest issues are:

1)       Making sure that Campus Center and Business Center on the new Mt.SAC construction plans are funded and gives priority over other projects. I believe the students, voters and other organizations on campus supported Bond Measure R which is providing funding for construction of new Mt.SAC building in the hopes that there will be a Campus and Business Center. We need to make sure the constructions of these building are on track.

2)       I would like to make teacher’s evaluations open to students and general public. It was stipulate in the teacher’s contract to have no department evaluations open to students. Student are left with a disadvantage of not being able to see if the teacher is competent, stable and make a clear judge to take a class or take that teacher based on these evaluations done by students which the departments collect. I believe we should have a system of evaluations done internally by students which will be official evaluations which only students can see. I believe this is possible and an important step in increasing student rights.

3)       Making sure human rights, equality and diversity are promoted and supported in all department and places in Mt.SAC.

4)       Introduce a new parking system based on UCLA where all the parking lots (student and staff) will both get barcodes on cars which allows them to mark any ware on campus, also solving students having problem to park. Also introducing incentives for people to carpool, use environmental friendly vehicles and use public transit.

5)       Making sure that Spring break comes back in either 2006-7 or 2007-8 calendar in Mt.SAC.

What challenges do you see in the future?

1)       Opening up student government to student by passing Sunshine Ordinance. This piece of legislation will make a clear, transparent system of government where students can make the student government officials be accountable. This also allows students to be involved in student in the decision making instead of going to other parties or committees.

2)       Making sure the Campus and Business Center are funded

3)       And solve any challenges that come my way.

How would you encourage more students to get more involved with school activities?

Always check out clubs and organization and their posting on the building, get involved with clubs and organizations like Alpha Gamma Sigma by finding information at 9C room 1 or Phi Theta Kappa at 26B room 101, also get to know student government meeting on Tuesdays and Thursday at 2-4 P.M at Student Life. Please also work with Inter Club Council to be informed on events by attending meeting at 12-1 Mondays. There are so many ways to join, so drop by at the Associate Student Office at 9C.

First Inaugural Address of Mohammad Naim, Associate Student Vice-President

My fellow students :

My first vice-presidential inauguration of the 21th century at Mt.SAC, let us as students lift our eyes toward the challenges that await us through the coming years. We are fortune enough a Vice-President, a maitre who will provide a chance to put us at the edge of a new era, called culture of peace. I was guided by the visions of the former A.S Student Trustee John Christopher Lee, A.S President Denny Ying, U.S president Bill Clinton, Nobel prize winner Wangari Maathai, Pulitzer Prize Dr. Brian Greene and many others to be motivated to go where no one dares to go.  As a former A.S Senator I achieved a lot, most notably being one of the student representatives meeting California state legislators, and Senators to lower student fees, and other issues like AB 982. Also I was helping out in student rights and awareness issues, working with charitable organizations like the American Red Cross/Crescent and Salvation Army with many projects like Tsunami Relief Effort and also “Adopt-a- Family” project. I did a lot of social and charitable fundraising to help out the needy. These things are need in order to show compassion and be supportive of people around the world in trouble, even though I am not superman trying to save the world, but I will try my very best to be like him. One of my favorite quotes is by Ralph Waldo Emerson about Success:

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success."

This quote has a special significance for me because Emerson redefined success radically and changed by my opinion on how to live a better life. He explained that success is not always materialistic gains, but is social awareness, helping other, make the world a better place, and making life easier for other. The definition of success given by Emerson means a world where people succeed by their own standards by endurance and persistence in reaching self goals in the face of tough criticisms or difficulties. This definition helped me become more determined to be involved in community services like American Red Cross Tsunami Relief and Salvation Army’s Adopt a family programs to make life better for other and to better understand needs of others. This quote has helped me value criticism from friends and others, and persist in self goals in face of hardship, and be academically successful.

Some of my ambitious plans are to get the Sunshine Ordinance passed in Associate Students, Mt.SAC Board of Trustees, Walnut City Council and hopefully incorporated into L.A County ordinances. Another of my projects is Evening of Higher Education – Host a night with the student governments of U.C.L.A., U.S.C., Cal Poly Pomona, and the California State University, Fullerton. There are so many social events like Battle of the Bands, Social Justice Workshops, and other more interest activities and events on campus. I also plan on challenging many school policies on campus like Grading issues, Safety issues, Book prices, Teacher evaluation being open to students, and Measure R which have left students stunned and disappointed in the college governance. I will work hard to resolve and bring more student awareness on these issues. There are many other events and policies I have planned out, but the best way to find out is to contact me @ Student life or call me at (909) 594 5611 ext 5955 to help support and hear your views/issues.

Please join me in a struggle to bring back the quality of education back at Mt. SAC, get a true Student Bill of Rights made by students passed in Board of Trustees, bring back Campus Center and Business Center in the Mt. SAC construction plan to support club offices, events, and the largest program on campus, Business.

Thank You,

Mohammad Naim,
