Wa (Topic Marker)
- Mr. Tanaka is the teacher.
- Tanaka-san wa sensei desu.

- Watashi wa seito desu. 

Ga (Topic Marker- More Emphasis) 
- Is Mr. Tanaka the teacher?
- Tanaka-san ga sensei desu ka. 

- No, I am not the teacher.
- Iie, watashi ga sensei ja arimasen. 

No (Possessive Particle) 
- It is my book.
- Watashi no hon desu.

- It is a Japanese car.
- Nihon no kuruma desu. 

Desu (Present Affirmative) 
(Is/Am/Are)
- Are you a teacher?
- Anata wa sensei desu ka

- Yes, I am a teacher.
- Hai, watashi wa sensei desu

Ja Arimasen (Present Negative)
(Is not/Am not/Are not)
- Are you a teacher?

- No, I am not a teacher. 
- Iie, watashi wa sensei ja arimasen.

Deshita (Past Affirmative) 
(Was/ Were)
- Were you a teacher?
- Anata wa sensei deshita ka

- Yes, I was a teacher.
- Hai, watashi wa sensei deshita.

Ja Arimasen Desita (Past Negative)
(Was not/Were not)
- Were you a teacher?

- No, I was not a teacher.
