By 1917, the war continued to be deadlocked. Both sides were exhausted by four years of conflict and the western stalemate looked unlikely to end. The American entry into the war in 1917, gave the allies an all importnat break. Thousands of troops and fresh supplies of weaponary revitalised the allied war effort.
