The Provisional Government and The March Revolution
||| Mainpage |||
The accession of the Provisional Government as Russia's parliament and legislature followed the first revolution of 1917. The February Revolution, although occuring in March, had begun on the 17th February 1917 by the Prime Minister declaring that there was a real chance of civil unrest unless concessions were made. The Tsar furious at this apparent dissertion of support refused and dissolved the Duma Parliament. The Duma members left but set up their own government - the Provisional Government - it was the first constitutional defiance of the Tsar. Kerensky a senior member of the Social Revolutionaires called for the Tsar to stand down or be deposed. The people in their protests took to the streets and the strikes similar to those seen in 1905 returned. On the 26th February, the army is forced to fire upon the protesters - the final act that would see the Tsar de-throned.
