The Provisional Government that replaced the Tsar's dynastic rule, came to power promising to initate democracy in Russia. Bolshevik Leader, V.I. Lenin, now ready to undermine the new government at any time he could. The 80% peasantry or proletariat of Russia demanded better rights to own their land and with the serious food shortages, meant the new government was forced to deal with the same problems that the Tsar had previously failed to do.The greatest problem above all was still Russia's involvement in the first World War; millions were dying and the economic cost was crippling the country's resources.

Extreme pressure was coming from the allies for Russia to remain in the war, after all she was forcing Germany into a two frontal war meaning that their troops were divided. Leon Trotsky, Lenin's second in command, responsible for the military tactics later employed in the Russian Civil War Russia's huge army also prevented the Germans from making any kind of breakthrough on its Eastern borders. The allies persisitence and economic backing persuaded the Provisional Government that Russia would for the time being remain in the war - the Bolsheviks were damning of this decision but sought to capitalise upon it.
