Past Logs

Here you can find... (drumroll)... Past Logs! (In case you couldn't guess that from the title.) They should be in chronological order, and I hope you enjoy reading the oh-so-exciting text and looking at the pretty pictures. Enjoy, enjoy.

Go see Signs . Yeah, I'm sure most people thought it wasn't scary, but I admit I was creeped out when I went to see it with Nikara. I won't speak for her, but I was tense the entire time. I even ended up whispering instructions to the characters. ("Don't do that you idiot!") I think the style in which it was filmed and the elements helped create the atmosphere, not to mention the incredible music. There was this three note theme which made it edgy and, well, scary. The filming was very well done, especially the angles and the method. All the actors were good (Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, others...), including the children, which is rare. (Jake Lloyd... Star Wars... *shudder*)
Anyway, the story is about... crop circles and... aliens. Duh... Okay. There was also a very nice and well-done faith theme. Back to the story. Well, the story is basically about a family (a father, two children, and the father's brother) and how they deal with invading aliens. I don't want to give away more, because the movie is much more enjoyable when you go in without any clue how it will end up.
There was humor, which I didn't expect. There were some great lines and situations that are hard to tell on paper, so I won't, and so I won't spoil it for you, because I know you, whoever you are, are going to go and see it now that I've recommended it.
Get ready for the cliche... To sum it up, GO SEE IT! No, really. This is the best movie I saw in the theater during the summer, so I definetly recommend it. I had a great time being scared, though I have feeling I'm one of the two or three who were frightened, but I don't mind, because I have another feeling (it's the Force) that I had a lot more fun than those who just sat and yawned the whole time did. Yawning losers. It was a very real movie, even though it was a sci-fi film. I could feel the emotions and actually felt I was there with the on-screen characters. (If you think that that's weird, you probably shouldn't be reading my log. You'll get a lot of that.) I sense this has started rambling, or, rather, all it was was rambling, so I'll wrap up. It's worth the time and money. Now, I have to wait for it to come out on DVD. Signs bloopers... hmmm...

"It was very dark."
"Why can't they get girlfriends?"
"That's exactly what the nerds want us to think!"

PS or by the way or whatever
I have no idea why they included a picture of Tracy Abernathy (I think that's the character's name) in this thing of pictures. She wasn't really in the movie--maybe five minutes. She was in a funny part, though.

Pictures, top to bottom: Graham Hess. Tracy. Graham, Bo, Merrill. Morgan.

Woohoo! A random Jackie Chan Adventures Picture! yay...

Yay! Another random picture, this time of Calvin and Hobbes! Check out this edited (?) comic: Click here

Okay. This post's Western to watch is Rio Bravo, starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Walter Brennan. This movie is great; is has humor, action, gunfights, explosions, and a little bit of romance, but not too much as to make you say every other scene "Is there kissing in this movie?" John Wayne plays a sheriff; Martin is his deputy, a recovering drunk; and Brennan is a delightfully kooky, amusingly cynical, trigger-happy, old cripple. This movie, though a little on the long side time-wise, though not long as in dragging-on-when-is-this-movie-going-to-end? long, is what good Westerns are made of.

Okay. I am here to tell you about a few tricks concerning a trick used in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. When using the trick with the fierce deities mask, where you can play as Feirce Deity Link. (I'd tell you how to, but I can't quite remember- check Nintendo Power.) DO NOT, under any circumastance, talk to a Bomber. The game freezes. And then you have to restart, which means you lose everything, which is very annoying and aggravating. Also, if you go into a building, you won't be able to get out. So don't go in. Another tip is DO NOT try the trick with the Giant's mask. Once again, the game freezes. To sum it up, I thought this trick was fun to do just for the sake of doing it, but a bit on the pointless side, especially because reactions to the Feirce Deity Link weren't programmed into the game, which is why it kept freezing.

Here's another hint, this time for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The prize, which you may have already guessed, for the completing the Gerudo Training Grounds, are the ice arrows. To get them, go through all the rooms and collect all the keys. When you have gone to the left and right chambers, go to the middle and unlock the first door to your left. Enter this first chamber and turn immediately to the left. Using the Lens of Truth, strat climbing the chain-link fence that you shold be facing. (If you are a bit lost or confused, here's a re-cap. You're in the first chamber to the left. Use the Lens of Truth and scan the ceiling. There should be a hole in the roof which you can get to by climbing the fence.) The room you come out in will have a key. If you've collected all the other keys-which is a simple task, just go through all the rooms- you can now reach the treasure. Yay...

That's all for this episode of... Arete's Logs! Tune in next time for more excitement and adventure.

Hello. How 'bout a random picture to start off?

I was wondering (which is a thing I do, occasionally, up there with breathing and eating), do Western movie buffs consider American Outlaws a Western? I certainly do, though I am hardly a Western movie buff. I'm more a Western movie fan, since "buff" implies I know a lot about Western movies, which I don't. Anyway, I really enjoyed American Outlaws. I especially liked the characters, which is not exactly a problem, but brings up a few points. Jesse James sure wasn't the nice guy he is in the movie. So, American Outlaws fits into an alternate universe (AU) of the Old West.

By the way, in case you were wondering, this here picture is of Frank and Jesse James (left to right) holding guns on someone. I don't quite remember when or where or on who... sorry... Anyway, they are holding guns. yay... The picture is from the movie American Outlaws

A line from the movie:"There ain't no bank holiday!"

Of Rogues and Critters is an incredibly funny fanfic about the Rogues by a Zeynep Dilli. It is about Gavin, his phobia of bugs, how Wes finds an opportunity to play a typical Wes prank, how Wedge and Tycho try to protect the young pilot from Wes' nefarious scheming, and how poor Hobbie gts caught in the middle.

Are you really bored and have nothing to do? Give the GA a call and donate today! Or... rent a movie! A very good Western (in case it wasn't noticeable, I've been going on a Western movie rampage all summer) is Red River. It stars John Wayne and some other people whose names I don't remember... sorry! It's about an old guy (Wayne) and Matt(Montgomery Clift), a young man who has been like a son to Wayne ever since Indians attacked the wagon train they were in and killed everybody except Matt, Wayne, and an even older guy, Groot. They begin a cattle drive, along with about twenty other cowboys that Wayne hires, in order to bring Wayne's cows (and there are a lot) to the railroad. The story is about what happens on the trail as things get worse and worse (or, as Rick O'Connell would say, "better and better"). The characters and plot and most of the dialogue are excellent, though the ,little romantic dialogue there is rates up (er, down) there with that of Attack of the Clones. The special effects, if one can call them that, are from the Stone Age, but besides those two faults, the movie is very enjoyable. (Pict.-left to right- Wayne, Matt)

Okay, not only have I been going Western movie (and book) crazy, I've also been going Hardy Boys crazy. About two-thirds of the books I have read this summer have been Hardy Boy books. One main reason is that Costco sells a six pack (haha six-pack. get it?) for twelve bucks, which is a great bargain compared to the thirty-six dollar price at a bookstore. True, the Hardy Boys may seem thin and for younger kids, but I find them interesting and fun to read. I've found words I have had to look up and a bunch of terms/expressions that I've had to ask about because they were used during the times the books were written, and haven't been heard since those days. I've always enjoyed Hardy Boys books, more than Nancy Drew, for one thing (Nancy Drew is boring! No one gets "kayoed" the way people are in the Hardy Boys...), but this summer I've just been going all out on the series. In the Redwall tradition of naming seasons, call it the Summer of the Revival of the Hardy Boys. If you are in the mood for some light reading, pick one up. Check out this comprehensive site: The Un-official Hardy Boys Home Page (Pict.-left to right-Frank and Joe Hardy)

So... that's all for this episode of Arete's Log. Stay tuned, same bat-channel, same bat-time, for the next exciting episode!
