Abu Simbel - Temple of Ramesses II

By Tony Escobar

Abu Simbel is no doubt one of the greatest architectual achievements in ancient times. Built by Ramesses The Great, its purpose was to house the cult worshiping the great pharaoh. With four gigantic statues potraying the king, and the alignment with the sun so at day break the sun hits deep inside revealing a statue of Ramesses II seated next to Osiris and Ptah.

Built next to the Nile in Nubia, one of its purposes was to frighten and remind boat riders that passed about his glorious victories in battles and his godly powers the egyptians claimed he had. Before passers saw an immense temple with pictures of dead prisoners and a large number of egyptian soldiers that frightened them. Today passers see one of the greatest architectual achievements of the ancient world, one that will etch the name of Ramesses The Great into all eternity.
