Part 1 Of Journey

August 13, 2002

This was the day that the Riendeau Children had been counting down to all summer. They were finally going to be on their way! The excitement was overwhelming to say the least. The "are we there yet?" comments had already started in jest before pulling out of the driveway.

Today we would begin our journey of 6 states in about 1 1/2 weeks. Our journey today takes us from NJ to VA via Delaware to Maryland and finally into Va. We would be entering Va., via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, (one of my favorite places ).

Our Journey into Va.,  had been relatively easy most of the day. We stopped on the Bay Bridge at the observation deck, and then, when we were almost over the bridge we stopped on the fishing pier so that the children could see the ships and read a bit of the history of the building of the bridge.

Our traffic woes began after we left the Bay Bridge. We were entering Hampton VA., and the traffic was horrendous along these last few miles of highway into Williamsburg. I managed to get a few pictures of some interesting looking trees while waiting almost a half hour to merge onto a lane of highway, that we thought was going to speed our trip a bit. However, the further along the way that we traveled the deeper the traffic became.

We finally pulled into our hotel hours past our estimated time. Even though we were all hungry I don't think that any of us had the energy to find a place to eat.

Once we unpacked and the kids had a chance to check out the indoor pool we headed to a nutritious dinner of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The restaurant had much to be desired, but it was food.

Finally back to the room and off to bed to begin our days of adventures in Va.

Today we went to Bush Gardens. I couldn't believe how large this park was. The day was enjoyed by all as the kids and hubbie went on several rides.

My enjoyment was the bird sanctuary. We had the pleasure of viewing Bald Eagles. These Eagles are ones that aren't able take care of themselves on their own. None of them had the ability to fly. All their food was provided for them, laid out in a neat row across the grass.

As we were leaving this area to see the white wolves a Red Macaw escaped from his trainer and flew right past me. He landed in a tree not far from where I was standing. I managed to get just a couple of pictures of this beautiful bird. According to his trainer, he was only a baby. Just learning the ropes of being a show bird.

When we left that evening all had a wonderful time and were exhausted.

Today we would be traveling to the Water park. The kids were definitely looking forward to this event.  This was the perfect day for this event. It was the hottest day so far. Unfortunately we were rained out after being in the park for almost a half of a day. So we headed home and just drove around looking for a place to eat, and trying to get our bearings for Colonial Williamsburg, and waiting for the weather to clear a bit before returning to Bush Gardens later on that evening.

Unfortunately When we got to Bush Gardens we were only in the park for a few hours when the Storms came back. We were stranded in a restaurant for  about 1 1/2 hours. We met a few nice people from Pa that were there on vacation so it was nice to wait out the storm while enjoying the company of strangers.
