I commit myself to earning my living honestly.

This commitment is paramount. It implies that we reject dishonesty as a means of fulfilling our needs. Dishonesty in our dealings with our fellow beings can only lead to either self-loathing or an aversion towards our fellow beings for being foolish enough to fall into our clutches. Both sentiments are equally destructive. It would be better for the salesman who knows his goods to be shoddy to seek other less profitable work than to continue earning his bread by living a lie and forcing others to swallow that lie by the force of one’s will power.

Of course, it is not always possible to find any source of employment at all. But the committed Newpy should not despair at that. In that situation, adjustments need to be made to expectations and while basic needs are met, then activities should be sought that can still enrich our lives, but which cost us nothing but our time.
