I commit myself to accepting the common sense behind the maxim “All things in moderation” and I commit myself to avoiding harmful indulgences which only cause detriment to my own being, that of others and the planet we all share.
This is a commitment to avoid addiction. It is not a wholesale condemnation of aspects of our lives that are genuinely pleasurable. A glass of good wine can be a sensual experience to some, and why should anyone deny the experience to those who enjoy that pleasure. However, we all need to recognize when the desire for pleasure has become an obsession and if we cannot deal with a certain pleasure in moderation then it is better to deny ourselves that dangerous enjoyment which could lead us into addiction and seek out an enjoyment that we do not become addicted to, but are able to healthily enjoy. There are thousands of pleasures available and many of them require no other resource than individual will to partake of them.
Obviously, substances which are highly addictive should be avoided by everyone. “Moderation in all things” is impossible for certain substances which create an addiction that saps the will and leads the user into slavery to their agenda and I am speaking here of tobacco as much as heroin or cocaine.
From food to sex, the sensual world is there to be enjoyed, but the Newpy should always be conscious of the dangers inherent in overindulgence of pleasures and be aware of the limits to which their body can go before pleasure becomes a harmful obsession that causes harm to the individual and those who surround them.
