A commitment to living within your means does not simply mean a blanket rejection of credit cards or mortgages. It means being aware of the state of your finances and committing yourself to not getting into situations where the quality of your life is impoverished by getting yourself into situations where your wants, or indulging your whims, has led you into debts which your income cannot possibly hope to cover.  If you are forced to work long hours simply to indulge a whim, putting a strain on your own peace of mind and on your relationships with others, then you should perhaps assess the value of that whim.
