I commit myself to seeking balance within myself and harmony in my relationships with those with whom I come into contact.
Committing ourselves to seeking balance within ourselves does not mean attempting to live a thoroughly dull life without passion. It implies an active commitment to maintaining our equilibrium at all times. The unbalanced individual is capable of actions that he or she may regret later, a moment’s thoughtlessness can undo weeks of patient relationship building; a slip of the tongue can cause pain and suffering. The balanced individual can give themselves to enthusiasm or passion without losing control of their awareness towards others. On an individual level, this is what this article seeks to remind us to do.
On a social level achieving harmony with everyone you come into contact with implies that trying to see the positive side of each individual you meet, trying to see their individual worth and appreciate their unique contribution to the tapestry of your life. It means refraining from malicious gossip and allowing the behavior of others to differ from patterns you have set for yourself; respecting the differences while they do not do active harm to you or your loved ones. While the Newpy should be aware that speaking out is often a duty, a right or a commitment to life, there are also circumstances where it is best to remain silent, rather than to tacitly support behavior of which the life affirmer cannot approve by sharing in negative conversations.
