Thaleh Sap Waterbird Sanctuary
Thaleh Sap Waterbird Sanctuary

Thaleh Sap is a massive fresh water lake close to Hat Yai. This lake is a really important breeding area for waterbirds, and our boss took us to see it when it was at its best (the wild waterlillies were flowering and the birds were breeding).
Hut and waterlillies
This building is out on the lake and at this time of the year is completely surrounded in waterlillies.
waterlillies
The waterlillies are only open in the morning so you have to get up really early to see them at there best (they are closed by 10-11 o'clock!)
Swamp Hen
In amongst the waterlillies there are loads of waterbirds, one of the most colourful is the Swamp Hen
sunrise over the lake
This was the view that we awoke to the next morning (from our guest house balcony, before heading out onto the lake in a long-tailed boat
the lake and reflection
The lake looks fantastic first thing in the morning
Lillies on the lake
This was taken from the longtailed boat as we went out, they waterlillies seemed to strech right off into the horizon
Breeding birds
You can see the birds filling the trees, this was one of the breeding areas. The motor on the boat had to be switched off and the guy had to push the boat with a pole to get into this area (so as to not disturb the birds
Close up of a pink lilly
This is a close-up of one of the pink waterlillies, which are the most common on the lake.
closeup of a white lilly
The white waterlillies are not quite so common out on the main part of the lake
