ANONYMITY is a big word and covers a wide range on the internet. Many users do not really know why or what anonymity on the internet is actually for. Okay, in the case of the hacker or someone wanting to commit a malicious act they would need to be anonymous. But, the real question is WHY do you need to be anonymous, if you are just surfing the web. Simple answer, most websites these days can easily trace where you came from, how long you stayed on a specific page, what type of computer you are using, even the monitor settings!! All this is done using a code embedded into a webpage called a 'javascript' or the actual trace is done through the server using SSL. Either way, you leave a 'footprint' behind you - now your probably wondering if there is a way of covering your 'tracks'....
BROWSING ANONYMOUSLY
Covering your tracks is a simple process with browsing the web, usually done using a proxy server. Note some ISP's give you access to a proxy server when you sign-up with them, this is not the type of proxy we are referring to. These proxies supplied by ISP's or OSP's are for caching of websites you visit to enable faster access when you return to the same website. Some ISP's use a proxy server to actually restrict access to certain parts of the internet, so in theory you can bypass this by using another proxy.
The proxies we are referring to are anonymous proxies, similar to public proxies they vary in many ways which include speed, ftp (File Transfer Protocol) access, secure server access, telnet, gopher, etc.
For a list of proxy servers click on the "PROXIES" link, this will give you a detailed list, which we try and keep updated.
You can enter a proxy server address and port number in all browsers, usually found under 'Advanced Settings'. Many users 'chain' say two or three or more proxy servers together in order to give them better security. This does work but, not in all cases you do have to experiment with different proxy servers, because some do not allow 'chaining'. If your wondering how do you enter more than one proxy address into your browser, it is done in the main url bar. You must however note, that 'chaining' does cause a drop in transfer times.
STILL UNDER DEVELOPMENT....
