"Ekaterina and the Firebird" will be appearing at Tor.com on January 1st! This story is a new take on an old Russian fairy tale: the quest for a blessing from the elusive firebird. On Ekaterina's fourteenth birthday, a rare firebird sighting sets in motion a chain of events that will reveal hidden truths, transforming her life and changing her family's fortunes.

Daughters of Frankenstein anthology wants your mad scientist stories!

Lethe Press is seeking short stories and novellettes for its forthcoming anthology, Daughters of Frankenstein: Lesbian Mad Scientists! We're looking for more cinematic-style "mad science"--over-the-top vs. textbook--so everything from alchemy to steampunk to cloning in tanks is fine. The protagonist must be lesbian and her sexuality cannot be a stigma. While the mad scientist need not be the protagonist, she must be a three-dimensional character and her interest in (mad) science should have a natural rationale as in real life (though her desired ends to whatever experiment takes place as one of the story arcs need not be natural at all!). Our preference is stories that take place in 19th and 20th centuries, but we are open to other time periods and contemporary tales.

This book would be shelved in SF/Fantasy. So this is not an erotica anthology. Elements of romance are fine and welcome as long as they are natural to the story.

Editor's Note

Right now I'm pretty happy that I figured out a "recovery plan" for what to do after major life events upend everything. I'll be needing it soon, since my second child was due three days ago (she's making us wait!). In the meantime, it's really useful having a place to write down the things that I won't be able to work on now or in the near future, so I can pick them back up more easily once I have the time/attention span.

Real "Editor's Notes" will return once I'm back from maternity leave.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Not a whole lot is new! Fortunately, there are always writing-related things that can keep me busy even when I don't have the creative energy for working on writing projects.

Editor's Note
In the beginning, keeping track of writing deadlines is easy. You don't have any! Sure, you probably have buckets and buckets of personal goals and self-imposed due dates, but that's not (quite) the same thing. For the longest time, I lumped my deadlines and self-imposed due dates together with all my other writing-related to-dos. Result? A long, jumbled list of things I wanted to do for writing, and a tendency to get to things at the last minute or not at all.

Recently, I've taken some steps towards fixing that.

I separated hard deadlines, indifferent deadlines, and soft goals. Hard deadlines are for projects where people are expecting something from you by a specific date. Indifferent deadlines are for projects where people expect something by a certain date, by they aren't necessarily expecting anything from you. Soft goals are self-imposed. Practically speaking, they're not deadlines at all. Now I keep a list of hard deadlines and a list of indifferent deadlines where I'll see it every day before I begin writing. In my case, that means at the top of my writing log (where I keep track of all the writing and writing-related things I do day-by-day). It makes it much easier to see when I need to prioritize.

I also went through my to-do list and separated out the more urgent items into a separate list so that I could do those first. Don't ask how long my to-do list is. It's ridiculous. The urgent to-do list, however, is much more manageable.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Mostly I've been grumbling about having to go back and reread a large chunk of my serial story so that I can replace what I didn't realize should be the end of the book when I wrote it. (This caused some discontent with that section. It really helps to know when you're supposed to be writing The Big Climax and Emotionally Satisfying Ending, I tell you.)

Dragon's Roost Press is currently raising funds for a dark speculative fiction anthology to benefit canine rescue. My short story, "Belongings," will be included in this anthology.

Editor's Note

Writers are people with lives. Some of us have very busy lives. It's easy to fall into the trap of believing that we are "losing" writing time: losing it to work, losing it to illness, or losing it to our children. Believe me, this is much on my mind as I move through the third trimester for my second child! I need to remind myself to view this as an illusion that results from looking at too small a piece of the picture. Life is the long game, and our time is infinite right up until we suddenly have none. Of course, none of us know when that will be.

That said, I've been learning to look for hidden writing time, time that was available that I didn't realize I had. Time to write a longhand story while going somewhere on the bus, to scribble in a notebook for fifteen minutes while my toddler plays with his blocks, to do editing at a coffee shop with a great playroom, and to do writing-related tasks in the evenings while spending time watching a movie or listening to music with my husband. Time is more fluid than we sometimes think.

Spellbound & Spindles - The guidelines below are for a special issue of Spellbound—a children’s fantasy e-zine for 8-12 year olds—and Spindles—a companion adult anthology.

Editor's NoteA friend of mine recently asked how to make writing stories a habit. She has some ideas, but she needs practice in writing consistently. Write consistently, butt in chair, make writing a habit: those are pieces of advice that writers hear a lot. This doesn't work for everybody. Some people are by nature binge writers, and others can only produce worthwhile material when circumstances are right. For me, making writing a habit is crucial. When I haven't written for a while, the quality of my writing goes down until I can get back into the groove, so to speak. I need it to be a habit.

So how do I (try to) do it?

1. Write a little bit at a time, every day, no matter what. This is not about you meeting your goal of 5,000 words a day. This is about you sitting down and writing every day. The amount you "have" to write should be so small that you can push it out in about fifteen minutes if you have to--and you'll feel silly about complaining that you don't want to do it, since it takes so little time. Freewriting is one way to do this.

2. Schedule it. Maybe this is the thing you do after dinner every day for an hour. Maybe it's what you do when the baby's napping every afternoon. Maybe it's what you do every morning on your bus ride in to work.

3. Reinforce it with little rituals that you won't ever feel reluctant about (this works best if you have a habit-forming personality). When you start, have a piece of chocolate, listen to a particular song or start up a playlist for the story you're currently writing. Be careful with this. You can become overly dependent on your starting rituals. You can also build up a ritual until it starts taking time away from your writing. Try to avoid that!

4. Keep writing on your mind when you're not writing. Maybe that means deliberately daydreaming about your story during a commercial break, or while you're walking the dog, or doing dishes. Keep a notebook around to scribble down notes whenever inspiration comes to you. Keeping the story always on your mind will help build momentum and make you *want* to keep the habit going.

Editor's Note

Grammar is important for a writer, yes? Yes.

Automatic grammar checkers are generally pretty lousy, right? Right.

So what's a writer to do? Use reference materials! You can go (very) old school with the free edition of Strunk's The Elements of Style available online at http://www.bartleby.com/141/ . A more modern desk reference is also probably a good idea. I'm fond of my A Pocket Manual of Style. For all those finicky little questions like when titles should be capitalized, I like Grammar Girl: http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/grammar-girl .

Grammar is on my mind since I just reviewed Grammarly (http://www.grammarly.com/), a grammar-checking program and online webapp. The short version? I have yet to find a grammar checker that will catch all errors without spitting up a ton of false positives. Grammarly might be useful to people just starting to write or people who speak English as a second language, since they do a very good job of explaining the different grammar errors that are possible. What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Two SF/F conventions within a month of each other doesn't leave a whole lot of time for anything else! But I've finished writing "Jill Underhill," my short story side project, and I'm busy researching digital encryption and handwriting analysis and medieval monks for my next one. Hopefully, my notes from the panels I attended/participated in will get posted soon, when I have time.

The horror anthology Eulogies II: Tales From the Cellar is now available in print on Amazon.com (ebook versions coming soon). This anthology includes my short story, "The Miracle Material."

When manufacturers think they've found the perfect material, it soon becomes more common than plastic. That's when the troubles start.

Excerpt:

The landfill is safe. I think. Even tupperware frightens me now. The sight of a discarded teddy bear moves me to tears. I wonder if Meredith's teddy bear still lies abandoned on her bed, held under siege by the ever-glowing blue stars that decorate her bedroom.

I tell myself that Meredith is safe and happy. We came from the sea, the scientists said. When there were scientists. What could be more natural than for us to return to the sea? I tell myself that she is safe and happy within the bosom of the sea.

I know I lie.

Wherever Meredith may be, however she feels, she is not my little girl anymore. And it is all my fault.

Editor's Note
Lists and goals--don't get the two mixed up! Now, before I get any irate comments, let me add that I think there's nothing wrong with having a list of goals. Let me explain. You may have figured out by now that I am a list-maker from way back. My to-do lists are terrifying in size and have items stretching back to 2005 (I wish I was making that up). These lists include urgent things like sending submissions back out, important but not urgent things like transcribing that handwritten story out of that notebook, way overdue things like finishing final edits on that one really good story, and a gazillion small details that should get attended to someday, like fixing that web link or adding that thing to that other thing. Yes, I theoretically have ways of telling these things apart.

The problem is that sometimes these lists give me tunnel vision. It's easy for the tiny details to overwhelm me, until I forget the larger goals. I stop using those goals as a compass to find my way through the confusing thicket of minutia and proliferating ideas. I get lost (a little like that metaphor).

It's amazing how much simpler dealing with a massive task list becomes once you set some medium-term goals. Call them resolutions, or project management goals, or a business plan, if you like. For me, I think that three months out is about the right time frame. Longer than that, and I start getting swallowed by generalities. Shorter than that, and I'm tripped up by task lists.

I wrote out some medium-term goals as part of my catching-up-from-sickness process, and I really like the way it's helped me focus again. So I'm adding that as a permanent item on my "recovery plan" . . . and I'm adding a recurring reminder in my calendar so that it becomes a regular part of my writing routine.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

My writing is revving back up, now that I'm healthy again. It feels great! I have a new short story I'm almost done with, and I figured out why I've been having trouble with my novel-length project and how to fix it. (Hint: it wasn't one novel.)

Editor's Note

Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is to pick yourself back up after you trip over an obstacle that life throws in your path. This seems to be a lesson that I have to keep learning over and over again, to the extent that I wonder if I need to start writing myself a "recovery plan" to help get started again after something throws me for a loop. It's not a bad idea. I deal best with overwhelming projects or life changes by figuring out routines and making lists (you may have guessed!).

This time around it was injury followed by sickness, and it took about three months before (now!) I felt like myself again. Aswiebe's Market List was one of the things that fell through the cracks again. I do need to have a plan to keep that from happening.

Much like a print-out of your internet provider's phone number, a recovery plan is something you want it to be right there when you need it. When you need it most is when you can't use your regular means to get it, whether it's because the internet is down or because you're still scrambling to figure out where you're at.

At any rate, I'm working on "recovering" right now! This newsletter includes the May market listings update, and if everything goes according to plan (knock on wood), the June update will go out a lot closer to schedule. Editor's Note

How do you motivate yourself to write, day after day (assuming you're not a binge writer, that is)? As my writing time shrinks, thanks to my darling toddler, I've become more and more concerned about how to squeeze the words out during those brief times when I *do* have uninterrupted time for writing. I no longer have the luxury of dilly-dallying around all day in order to get my word count. I'm trying:

1. Planning and visualizing beforehand: http://thisblogisaploy.blogspot.com/2011/06/how-i-went-from-writing-2000-words-day.html

2. Rewards! Kelly Barnhill, author of Iron-Hearted Violet, mentioned that she uses the reward of a chocolate chip every so many words. I find that Hershey's Mint Bliss chocolates do the trick for me, and every hundred words or so, knowing that I've earned 1/4 of a chocolate really does seem to light up those reward centers in my brain.

3. Gold stars--just like in kindergarten. I'm trying putting a gold star on my calendar for every day I write, and a fancy multicolored star for when I write more than a certain number of words. The jury is still out on whether this works for me. I forget to put the stars up as often as not, which argues that they aren't an effective motivator for me.

4. Spreadsheets! I've started using The Magic Spreadsheet (of myth and lore): http://murverse.com/at-long-last-the-magic-spreadsheet/ . It does seem to be working for me, at least in the sense of strongly motivating me to write that minimum 250 words every day, no matter what. It isn't as effective at motivating me to write swiftly enough to increase my wordcount, but the "writing every day in a row" thing sure is working, and I know that for me, that can be crucial.


What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

(Note: You may have noticed this newsletter skipped last month. My grandmother died about the time that the newsletter was due to go out, and after we'd traveled for the funeral and come back home and gotten up to speed on everything else, the newsletter would have been late enough that I decided to just wait for the next month.)

I've confirmed that I'll be attending CONvergence, a large fantasy and science fiction convention in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Schedules are still being finalized, but I will likely be talking on panels about things writingy, apocalyptic, and conspiracy-related (shh--don't tell anyone).

From Their Cradle to Your Grave is now available on Amazon.com! This includes my reprinted short story, "The Perfect Costume." This horror anthology is all about tales of terrifying tots, toddlers through teenagers. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but doesn't that sound like a great gift for the new parents in your life?



Marc likes vampires. A lot. One Halloween, he thinks he's found them. That's when everything starts to go bad....

This Halloween her son was ten--almost eleven--years old. She planned to make sure that Marc had a truly wonderful Halloween before he was too old to fully enjoy it. Although all the other years he had made do with a costume bought second-hand from Salvation Army, or from the half-price rack at Wal-Mart, this year she wanted to make him the perfect costume. This year, he would have a perfect Halloween.

She was disappointed that Marc didn't want a Halloween party for his friends. She wasn't aware that he had no friends, that he sat in the classroom isolated from all the friendly conversation and joking that surrounded him, that during lunch he sat alone and read one of the vampire novels he had smuggled out of the library when his mother was looking the other way. She didn't approve of young children (as she thought of Marc) reading dark stories like that. When he was little, she read him only the sanitized Disney fairy tales.

Marc didn't like them. He didn't like any fairy tales until he discovered an old version of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales. He much preferred "Cinderella" when the evil stepsisters sawed off their toes and heels with a knife in an effort to fit into the glass slipper, when they were forced to dance in red-hot iron shoes at Cinderella's wedding. He laughed when he read "The Three Little Pigs" and found that the first two pigs didn't escape their substandard homes but got eaten by the big, bad wolf. He approved when the wolf got boiled to death by the last pig, instead of making friends with it. Although Marc thought "The Little Mermaid" was still a sissies' story, he liked it much better after he read the version where the mermaid felt like she was walking on sharp knives the whole time she was human, and where she died in the end. It felt right. His favorite fairy story of all was called "The Goosegirl," and he loved it because of its bloody, lyrical beauty.
