1998 - 1999

Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Cambodia

My second year in Cheongju passed by quickly. Several of the seven professors that had been hired the year before had left and they were replaced with new people. Some would become friends over the course of the next two semesters. Our lives settled down into what resembed semi-normalacy. There were still items to be purchased for our apartments; still problems to deal with that took, what we felt was an inordinate amount of time and energy; and challenges that we met and matched.

Japan: Osaka, Kyoto and Nara

Towards the end of August Diane and I headed for a week long tour of this most expensive Asian country. It was a lot of fun despite the heat and, as with other places, a definite cultural learning experience.

Thailand ... Again

The trip the year before only served to make me want to return to Thailand once more. As I go there at the end of the semester when it is freezing here I tend to liken my behavior to that of a migratory bird. Besides that, who wouldn't want to travel to a land where all these good looking males are?

Cambodia

Cambodia was both wonderous and less than I had expected. Many of the people I met were great. Angkor Wat was fantastic and a "must see". The extreme poverty and physical evidence of the effects of APM's were, however, hard to take and a continuous reminder that I have led a life that the majority of the world can only dream about.
