HTML Basics

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language, don't ask me what that means but it is the text we use to create webpages. First off, you're going to need a host, Netcolony is good for just about any site. Just remember to take out any *'s if putting these tags on your page.

With just about all HTML tags you start with <*whatever tag it is> and end with <*/whatever tag it is>. For example to start an HTML document you write in <*html> and to end an HTML document you write <*/html> some sites might say that all HTML tags must be in capitals but it doesn't matter, it might help you distinguish what is HTML and what isn't in your mark-up field though. In between your two HTML tags you put all the stuff you want on your page. Also don't worry about new lines showing up in your site when you press enter, web sites are only programmed to read HTML for new lines but they count spaces.

Next we have the <*head> and <*/head> tags, in between these two tags you put your title and META stuff (That's for search engines). Right after the <*head> tag you put <*title>Your Title<*/title>. The META stuff gets tricky, the main ones you'll need are <*META name="description" content="A description of your site here"> and <*META name="keywords" content="All the keywords you can think of that people would type into their search engine to get to your site">. That's about all in the head tags.

For your page to work well you'll want to know about hexidecimal coded colours, a lot of sites will do it for you if you just type in the colour as in <*font color="red"> but some won't. Basically there are three primary colours of light Red Green and Blue and each owns two digits in hexidecimal coding so it goes RRGGBB and there are 16 digits 0-9 and A-F, F being the most influencial and 0 being the least <*font color="#FF0000"> would give same affect as the above mentioned tag if you write in "#FFFFFF" you'll get white light and if you write in "#000000" you'll get black. You know how to get red, to get green you write "#00FF00", blue is "#0000FF", purple is "#FF00FF" and so on, you don't have to always put F's and 0's but I'm doing the absolute brightest of these colours.

Now for some basics in making your actual page. <*b> and <*/b> makes whatever is in between them bold, <*u> and <*/u> makes whatever text is in between them Underlined, <*font color="whatever"> and <*/font> are used to change the colour of font in that area you can also use other thing instead of color="?" like, face="?", align="?", size="?", etc. <*center> and <*/center> make whatever is between them centred. <*h? align="??"> and <*/h?> are heading tags. ?= a number from 1-7, 1 being the largest. ??= center, left or right. The part align="??" can be changed to face="??" or color="??". <*br> makes
A new line. <*p> makes

A new paragraph. With <*p> and <*br> you don't need a / to finish it off unless, with <*p>, you add align="??" then you have to finish it off with a

. The last thing in this basics section is about <*hr> this gives you
a horizontal line. No matter what you put with it, you don't need to write <*/hr> after it. You can put color="??", length="??%" width="?", and other stuff with it I used color="red" for the one above. About the only other basic of html is <*a href="http://the.site.address/"> that's how you make a link, for it to work you must write something in between that tag and the <*/a> tag. To make an e-mail link write <*a href="mailto:your@address.com">, same as applies for the links, to end it simply write <*/a>.

We've given you the basics, we might write some more up later but to get more advanced info go to a specialist site for HTML help like Here.
