The Russians Are Coming
In 1957 with the launch of Sputnik, The Soviet Union had beaten the United States into outer space. This triggered a new emphasis on science in the U.S. schools. Science text books, including biology text books were revised. Biological evolution became part of the science curriculum. Anti-evolution statutes, though rarely enforced, found these new biology texts in violation of the creationism laws. Only by a 1968 ruling of the United States Supreme Court was It finally legal to teach evolution every where in the United States.
