Fairness

I saw an article the other day that was complaining about the internet and how any old person is now capable of starting up a blogger and expressing their opinion. The article was taking the perspective that a lot of times these bloggers don’t accurately represent whatever topic they chose to discuss and that this was dangerous because some bloggers have quite a bit of influence. The conclusion of the author was that it is becoming more and more necessary to have some “official” regulatory agency to police not just bloggers, but everything on the internet.

The article had this attitude that it was all prim and proper and doing everything in the best interests of the human race, but somehow, lost in the shuffle, is the fact that this was an article endorsing censorship and fascism.

The article ended with an acknowledgement that there is no current way to stop the bloggers and a plea to them that they be “fair.” For “fair” you might as well read in the phrase “that the bloggers remember to bring their opinions in line with the socially accepted ideals of America.”

Fair? Fair! Show me an example of media reporting anywhere that is fair! A bigger crock of shit I have never before born witness to. Here is this article taking the pretense that there is a major problem in the world and that problem is that too many people have the capacity to express themselves in a public forum where it is actually possible they might be heard. The author seeks to eliminate this freedom, and replace it with more of the dictatorial, one-sided reporting we get everywhere else, under the guise that he or she is protecting fairness!

I can’t understand how people can write shit like that and actually think they can get away with it. It is all representative of that peculiar 1st world brainwashing that has become so all-pervasive. I mean, Christ! Shouldn’t you wake up slightly when you start saying things that are so blatantly contradictory? You’d think that the endlessly repeated “Brave New World” mantra would start drying up when you look down at your paper and realize you’ve just typed “black is white.”

I can see how the internet would terrify the existing power structure. Finally there is the possibility that the actual truth of a situation might be recognized and reported in place of the endless torrent of lies that are constantly shoved down our throat.

Be fair? Fuck you!

What makes them even think that they’re even in that position of authority where they could dare to make such an idiotic, half-threatening statement? Who the hell are they? What divine right do they think they possess?

Be fair, don’t rock the boat too much Don’t report the truth, report what we report. We’re the status quo, don’t mess with us. Don’t contradict us or we’ll shut you down. The article (a fair version of the article) should have been written like this:

United media moguls who misrepresent the truth are becoming more and more concerned with the development of a free universal forum on the internet. Apparently, people have dared to actually post well-thought and well-researched opinions on the internet and, of even greater concern, people are actually reading them. This endeavor could seriously jeopardize the evil empire’s constant campaign of misinformation that floods the market and keeps the citizens of humanity stupid and docile. If only these “rebel bloggers” would just be fair!

Sure, there are bloggers on the internet that I’d like to shut up too. I don’t like those neo-nazi’s, or other hate groups, but for the sake of freedom, that’s the kind of shit you have to put up with. Look, nothing good comes easy, and if you want to stand up for an ideal like freedom, you’re going to have to take some blows. The proper strategy is to endeavor to educate people so that they don’t fall victim to evil propaganda, but you never see mainstream papers endorsing free and better education do you? Why? BECAUSE THEY WANT TO KEEP YOU STUPID!

I have no doubt that some clever jerk-off will eventually shut down the bloggers. They’ll make the internet another intellectual monopoly from which they express their ideas and their ideas alone. But for now, it’s too big, too easy to get access to. We’re living in a brief window of time in which one of the major forms of expression is completely unregulated by any outside agency. Make your voice heard!

And be fair, yeah, be fair to a higher ideal. That usually constitutes the definition of “unfairness” to evil assholes who have forever lived a life of privilege won from the oppression and exploitation of others.

The End
