NERV is a world wide organization charged with saving all humanity from beings called "Angels."  It has been given the evangelion series as well as other tools to carry out this charge, or that's what they like you to think.

Created by another organization called SEELE, NERV replaced a research project run by the organization (way before the first angel made it's presence known). Being a subsidiary of SEELE, NERV was intended to be the work horse.  The faithful follower if you may. Even though it utilizes the Evangelions to take out the angels, the real purpose is not what you think.  Secrets abound and treasures hidden, is NERV and SEELE's goal really to save humanity?
