       Seperating a mixture of solids

Planning and Organization Lab

Purpose: To quantitatively separate a mixture of solids into its components using appropriate lab techniques

Instructions:

In this experiment you are to work together with your partners and devise a way to separate the mixture into its components.

Keep in mind that this experiment is quantitative. This means that not only will you separate your mixture, you must do it exactly so that you know exactly how much (in grams) of each component is in your mixture.

If you are not sure what this means, ask your teacher.

Hint: A way to solve the problem would be to make a list of all the physical properties of the different components of the mixture.

Discussion:

· When writing your report, make sure you explain what physical property of each component was used to separate it from the mixture, and what separation technique(s) you used.

· Find the percentage error for the recovery of each component of the mixture.

· Account for the difference in mass between the initial mass of the components, and their final mass.
