Practice Problem 1

For each of the following compounds, predict whether you would expect it to be ionic or covalent.

(a) chromium(III) oxide, Cr2O3

(b) carbon tetrachloride, CCl4

(c) methanol, CH3OH

(d) strontium fluoride, SrF2

Solution

Cr2O3 and SrF2 are likely to be ionic because they contain a metal and a nonmetal.

CCl4 and CH3OH are more likely to be covalent compounds because they contain only nonmetallic elements.
