WW2-era First Person Shooter Links

WW2 Online: WW2 Online is a massively, multiplayer, online, FPS (first person shooter), and was the first of it's kind, no matter what any other game might say. Players can fight for the Axis or Allies, and can be ground soldiers, fly airplanes, guide naval river gunboats, and even field tanks and armored cars. This game is highly realistic, and is not for the CS twitch crowd. WW2 Online has a monthly fee, but it is worth every penny. The game is constantly updated.

Day of Defeat: Day of Defeat(DOD) is a WW2 modification of the retail game Half-Life. This mod is supported by a very active modding community, and new sounds, skins, maps, and sprites are released daily. It is a lot less realistic these days, after it's own retail release, but it is still a good infantry game. You can download it for free, or buy the retail version.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: MOH:AA is a amazing single player experience. You play as a US soldier during WW2, and are given specific missions to undertake from North Africa, to the frigid cold winters in Europe. Sound, and graphics are both top notch. The original game is a single player classic. This game is also multiplayer capable. A expansion, MOH: Spearhead, is also available, but I have not played it. It is rather short, and too pricey for the short content it adds to the original game.

Battlefield: 1942: Battlefield: 1942 is a WW2 FPS that does not get high praise from me. I only include it here, to allow people to take a look at it and decide for themselves if they like it or not. It is a multiplayer game, allowing players to field soldiers, tanks, planes, and even ships, but unilke WW2 Online, it plays more like an arcade game than anything else. Worse than Counter-strike, this game offers twitch fest fun for those that like it. A real waste of a game, in my opinion, as the realism is so low the Germans might as well be Stormtroopers, and the Allies Jedi Knights. In fact, the only redeeming quality about the game is that there are a lot of mods popping up these days, as it is extremely popular. Sadly, Soldier9's realism mod, seems to no longer exist, but some other mods offering realism can be found at this link to BF42.com.

Call of Duty: Call of Duty is set to debut in the Fall of 2003, and is from the former team that brought us the now classic MOH:AA. Call of Duty promises immersion like no other game to date, and will send players on campaigns as American, British, and Russian soldiers fighting against the German army during World War Two. The game promises teamwork, as you will play the single player game with squads of soldiers around you, just like the real soldiers. It seems the development team has taken great pains to work on the AI for Call of Duty, and has done some amazing work from all the reports I've been hearing. This is much different than MOH:AA, where most of the time you were going at it solo, Rambo style. The buzz around the gaming sites have pegged this one as an amazing piece of work, as a playable beta build was recently released. I am looking forward to this game.
