Police Department Wecke z.b.V / State Police Group Wecke z.b.V: the beginning of the most unique unit in the German army
Where it all began, on the Friesenstreet of Berlin Kreuzberg. In February 1933, on the third floor, left wing of the building.
On February 23, 1933, the then prime minister of Prussia, Göring, gaven an order to create a motorized police deatchment of 418 members. Only highly capable volunteers of the Prussian security police, mainly those from Greater Berlin, were to be trained. Major Wecke of the security police was given command of this new police unit, and it derived its designation, Police Department Wecke, from his name.
Within months, however, the nature of the police unit changed, moving slowly towards its destination as a military unit. In May 1933, the original unit was renamed Police Group Wecke, z.b.V. Organization grouping and a change in equipment and vehicles came with this renaming as well.
The group, on July 17, 1933, was given direct responsibility of the Prussian prime minister, Göring, and was renamed State Police Group Wecke z.b.V. It's old duties as a general police force were no longer, as it was now the first state police force in Germany. All future state police forces looked to this new group as an example for their development as well. At this time, the blue police uniforms were replaced by a green uniform, similar in cut and color to that of the German army. Soon after this, all sub-divisions and ranks within the State Police Group Wecke were made equivalent to those in the German army.
