Our first two stops on the Cruise were Katakolon
and Santorini, both in Greece. In katakolon we visited the ancient
city of Olympia, and the ruins of where the olympic games were first played.
Santorini is a city built on the edge of a 900 ft. cliff. From the
port the only ways up the cliff were by foot, donkey, or cable
car. The island Santorini is on (along with the other surrounding
islands) was once part of a volcanic island which blew up and buried the
ancient city of Akrotiri. The same volcanic explosion is believed
to be the reason for the dissapearance of Atlantis.
This is the gymnasium at olympia, it's where they would have the
wrestling matches among other things.
This is were the running events were held. That is the original start/finish line.
As you can see some of the world's best runners come here to run.
These three pictures are of Santorini. On the top right you
can just make up the switchbacks of the steps that go up the cliff.
Yes the donkeys went on the same path that the people went on. Just
to the left of the steps is the cablecar which is kind of tough to see.
At the bottom is a picture of the town on the way down on the cable car.
The ruins of the Akrotiri, as you
can see on the right they are still working on excavating the city.
The islands that used to make up the volcano, The island
in the center is the center of the caldera.
The group in front of the view over the volcanic islands.
