Black and Tans, while sometimes sold in bottles or available already mixed (on tap), are often made by combining an ale and a stout together, forming the B & T. If the two beers have just the right 'gravities', with respect to each other, then the two layers will not mix together and you can distinguish the separate layers. This is not always the case, but a mixing of the layers does not detract from the often great taste present in these beers.
