Beer Review: Delirium Nocturnum

Delirium Nocturnum is the one brown beer that could give Newcastle a run for its money. The sister ale to Delirium Tremens, itself a lighter brown beer, Huyghe's Delirium Nocturnum is an earthier-flavored Spaten Optimator, without the aftertaste. It has a creamy head and is as murky as a Mississippi mud pie. Although it's considered a Belgian Brown Ale / Belgian Strong Ale, this rare find looks like Texan oil and smells like the sap of some aging, Bavarian oak. An internet site reported that in late 1999, the State of Washington banned Delirium Nocturnum because of a law that forbids the sale of an alcohol product that promotes "excessive drinking" – apparently, the Webster Dictionary’s definition of Delirium conjured connotations of frenzied or crazy consumers. This is a sipping beer, so do not chug – or you may be branded as a frenzied minion of the beer variety. This is a great find - enjoy. -- Dopplebock

This beer made me feel tingly all over. Served at room temperature, this ale was delightful! Not hoppy but, rather, a sweet beer. Its flavor almost makes up for the goofy pink elephants on the bottle.... -- Mad Boris
