Beer Review: Spaten Optimator

A double bock (or doppelbock) meaning it has twice the malt of normal beers... "Bock" means "goat" auf Deutsch, and yes at 7.2% alc. this dark lovely does kick pretty well. Traditionally a spring brew, bocks are not for the timid...you'd better like dark beers or else, as one reviewer said, you may call it "nasty"....though for this guy, it's anything but! Sweet and deep, Optimator is an dark beer person's dream come true. "Spaten," by the way means "spade"... and Spaten beers have one shown on their label (apparently a pun on the name of the person who founded Spaten 600 years ago)--this beer has 2 shovels on its label... probably 'cause its a double.... Try it! -- The King

I had wanted to try this legendary beer for some time and to have found it on draft was just too much! Medium to dark in color, with a medium body, this brew was smooth, with a slightly smoky taste to it. I shall have to try it again to see if I can't wring more notes out of it. A good beer! -- Brewmeister G

Medium-to-dark in color, with a slight reddish tint to it, I thought I detected a slight roasted flavor on the aroma. This German brew had a smooth, full flavor in the medium-to-heavy body, and was almost a little sweet at the end, with a slight overall roastedness. A nice bock. -- Brewmeister G
