Interview with SUE DE WITT
I was able to talk to Sue briefly at the March guild meeting. I wanted to know a little about Sue and how she started in quilting.
Sue made her first quilt in the early 70s. Her first quilt class was in 1973 in Memphis Tennessee. Her first quilting endeavors were making basic traditional style of quilts. She said was just playing with quilting at first making baby quilts and basic sampler quilts.
In 1993 Sue became interested in applique and Baltimore Album style of quilts. She became a student of Audrey Dersha. She has also taken classes from Elly Sienkiewicz and Ami Simms. Since joining Evening Stars she has participated in many of the round robins, mystery quilts and has taken many of the workshops given by the speakers. Recently, her interests have expanded to the art quilts. When asked Sue told me her current quilting influences are her sewing groups “The Hens” and “Ladies of the Evening.” These ladies have helped her stretch her color choices and explore different quilting techniques.

Blotto Blocks JUNE 09 By Lee Collins
Lee presented the guild with a new block pattern called Spangle Stripes and Stars. Two simple patches gold stars on a blue background and red and white strips give this simple block a patriotic flair. Each completed block consists of two stripe patches and two star patches. Handouts of the pattern were passed out at the March meeting and will be available at future meetings. These blocks will be due at the JUNE MEETING. I liked the pattern so much I just might do this blotto. A copy of the block as a separate word document has been added to the email newsletter. Let Anna know (email ) if you did not receive it with your email newsletter.

Guild Paint Chip Challenge Due September 09
2. Select three fabrics that match those of the paint chips as close as possible. If a print is used the main dominate color in the fabric should be the color matching the paint chip. IT MUST BE OBVIOUS.

Homemade Spray Starch:
Boil 1 quart of water. Dissolve 4 tablespoons of liquid starch into 2 cups of cold water; add to boiling water and return to a boil, then remove from heat immediately.
Add 2 more cups of cold water -- let it cool. Starch should be clear and not milky.
Place it in a mist spray bottle and store extra starch in the refrigerator. Clean the iron with a wet terry towel or dryer sheets if starch starts to build up on your iron. This is extremely cost-effective--only 2 cents a quart no more clogging or inconsistent spraying! I like this method cause I am always knocking my can of spray off the ironing board and breaking off the sprayer.

Note from the editor: to EMAIL readers. Apparently there have been some difficulties with the MS-Word documents I have been sending. I have been using 10 pt to 12pt fonts in order to save space and limit the number of pages for the printing. Some members are having difficulty reading the smaller fonts or the style of font I have selected. I do try to make the newsletter readable for everyone. If you are having trouble reading the email on your monitor, you can change the size and style of fonts in a WORD document.
Highlight the text you want to change. Go to Edit and pick SELECT ALL. The text will be highlighted. Go to Format, select FONTS then chose the SIZE of fonts and STYLE that is easy to read. You can even go to CHARACTER SPACING and increase the spacing of the fonts to make them easier to read.

Beginning Thread Painting Workshop With Eve Agee
JUNE 23,, 2009 $35.00 9:30 TO 4 PM at Linda’s Quilt Shop in Davison
We will be having a 6 hour workshop on BEGINNING THREAD PAINTING at Linda’s Quilt Shop in Davison on Tuesday June 23rd from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. The instructor will be Eve Agee, an award winning quilter and Bernina Educator from North Carolina. Eve is a designer, author, and teacher. She has been teaching free motion embroidery and thread painting since 1977. Eve will be the guest speaker at our Guild meeting on June 24th.
This workshop will introduce students to two basic thread painting techniques- zig-zag and straight stitches. Students will learn about needles, thread, hoops, stabilizers, machine set up and movements to achieve shading and dimension in designs. A small design will be done in class.
The fee is $35.00 which includes a kit to complete your project. A supply list will be given to you when you pay your fee. You will need a wooden 7 inch machine embroidery hoop ( non squeeze.) We will be ordering hoops for who ever needs one. Check the box on the application form. You will pay for the hoops at Linda’s the day of the workshop.
This is a great opportunity to try thread painting! There will be pictures of Eve’s work to view at the meeting or you can go to her web site. http://www.evelynagee.com Eve says that you do not need a fancy machine to thread paint. Use a Singer Featherweight or 1967 Kenmore will do.
Hope to see you there!

Anna’s DVD review:
Just so you know this section is not in the printed form of the newsletter. I do not feel the guild should pay for what are essentially my opinions or comments. I am hoping you find this section of the newsletter enjoyable.
Last month I sent out a survey to include DVDs in the library. We only got three responses, so I am thinking that the issue will be tabled for now. If you still want to turn in a copy of the DVD survey just turn it in at the desk. The issue can be readdressed once we have an adequate amount of input from the guild.
The PATCHWORK SCHOOLHOUSE ( http://www.patchworkschoolhouse.com ) Workshop Series of DVD was recently seen on Quilter’s TV. ( www.quilterstv.com ) This is a series of 8-10 quilt DVDs teaching the basics of quilting. The series starts with Basic Training for Beginners, Fun with Triangles, Precision Piecing for all Levels of Quilters, Fun with Flying Geese, Fun with Machine Applique, and Finishing Well.
I bought the Finishing Well DVD because I am in the middle of finishing my UFOs and need all the help and ideas I could get. I thought Joanne Middleton was an effective and interesting teacher. She should each step explaining in easy to understand terms. I was able to follow the instructions easily. She taught several methods for block set ins, settings borders, and binding. Joanne’s philosophy is ….. “The better a quilter becomes at basic construction methods, the more confident they are at trying new patterns and ideas. Sound technique makes the process more enjoyable and creates more opportunity to create beautiful quilts that will be cherished for years.”
The production values of the DVDs were good, so I did not loose interest because of poor sound or viewing quality. I personally do not like the banners that flash across the screen when I was trying to view something, but that was a minor annoyance. The banners are great for note taking but are annoying when you want to view a technique. There was plenty of time to view the techniques and with DVD you can always hit re-play. I think I got my money’s worth with this 4 disc DVD set ( over 3 hours ) of quilting lessons and hope to get the rest of them in the future.
