The subspecies are little creatures that are basically an extention of Radu. The first time we see these little guys is after the King captures Radu at the beginning of Subspecies. Radu breaks off a few of his fingers, and from the fallen pieces form the subspecies.

The first task of these creatures is to help Radu escape from his father's trap and retrieve the Bloodstone. They also act as a watchout as the girls are near the castle. Then finally in the heat of battle, they quickly make a run for the Bloodstone and put it away for safe keeping.

In Subspecies 2 the creatures take on what I would say is their toughest challenge yet, they perform sergery and bring their master back to life. Then the poor guys disappear for a few days and finally reappear at the end of Subspecies 3, reforming from Radu's melted flesh, and attempt to figure out what to do with the broken Bloodstone.

The rest is a mystery. Not only do the subspecies disappear for Subspecies 4, but the Bloodstone doesn't seem to look quite like itself (please ignore the first Bloodstone..or this won't be as fun :) Did the subspecies replace the Bloodstone with a cheap immitation and run away in fear that Radu will notice? Could be..who knows. If so..we all know who to blame with we never get to see our favorite vampire again!

Here's some old news for those of you who have seen the first movie's videozone (yes..if you didn't know..there is more after the movie. Don't stop the tape at the credits..just enjoy the music and wait you silly person). Even though the subspecies were animated in the movies, the creatures were originally played by live actors. Due to technical difficulties or bad acting or whatever, they were later replaced with what you see now.

Oh..and as you can see on the trading cards..apparently one of the subspecies was more important than the others. His name is Lothim, was the leader of the bunch, and tried to break away from Radu's control. Umm..I don't get that from the movies..such imagination these trading card people have.
