Chapter 5

Alexis examined the gardenias but found no card. They were beautiful, they made her think of somewhere warm, relaxed. It wasn't a memory so much as a feeling but she knew gardenias meant something to her.

Just then her door opened and Jax walked in.

"Hi there, still mad at me?" He asked.

"I wasn't mad at you."

He looked at her sceptically.

"All right I was mad at you, but I'm over it. I see you shaved."

"As per your request."

"Do you always do as you're told?"

"Depends on who's telling. Tony wanted to talk to us once you woke up." He told her, ending their flirting.

"Does he know why I can't remember?"

"Only one way to find out. I'll go find him."

"Jax wait. Do you, do you know where these gardenias came from? There wasn't a card."

Jax looked over at the gardenias as though he hadn't noticed them before. She thought she saw a flash of anger in his eyes but he quickly covered it.

"They're from your brother, there was a card but I guess it fell out." He told her quickly. "I should go get Tony now."

After Jax left Alexis wondered why she didn't ask him about the man named Sonny. Part of the reason was that if she admitted overhearing the conversation she would also have to discuss his wife, something she wasn't ready to do yet. Another reason was that given Jax had lied to Sonny about her he might just lie to her about Sonny.

"Hi there." Tony greeted as he entered the room, followed by Jax. "I hear you got some sleep this afternoon, that's good. The more rest you get the better."

"Did you get my test results back?" Alexis asked nervously.

"Yes, and it's good news. Your memory loss, so far as we can tell, is being caused by swelling in the brain. Once the swelling goes down you should start to remember, though it may take some time."

"How much time?"

"It's difficult to say."

"But she will get her memory back?" Jax pressed.

"Well, you will probably lose anywhere from a couple hours to a couple days before the accident but the rest should return."

"Should?"

"Alexis nothing is a guarantee when you're dealing with the brain but based on what I see everything looks good."

"Thanks Tony." Jax said looking very pleased.

"Do you have any questions?"

"When can I get out of here?"

"We'll see, you still have some mending to do." He hedged.

"What about Kristina?"

"She'll be here as long as you are. All the nurses are in love with her anyway, I don't think they will mind." He told her smiling.

There was a knock at the door, then a young man entered.

"Oh I'm sorry I can come back."

"No come on in Nicholas, I was just giving Alexis some good news but we are finished now."

"I'll give you two some time alone." Jax said following Tony out.

Nicholas, her nephew stood on the other side of the room looking nervously at her.

"So you're Nicholas, I'm sorry I can't remember... It's good to see you." She smiled at him and he looked relieved.

Until that moment he had been so afraid, that she would be like his mother. He had never been as hurt as the day his own mother looked into his eyes and didn't know him. He thought it would be the same with Alexis, only worse. He had known Alexis so much longer, in many ways she had been the only motherly influence in his life. He loved her so much and yet he constantly took her, and her presence in his life for granted. His fears had been wrong, in spite of her memory loss she was greeting him with the same warmth she always did. He hadn't lost her.

"It's good to see you too." He told her, coming to sit down in Jax's chair and handing her a bouquet of flowers she somehow hadn't noticed.

"Thank you, they're beautiful."

"It's beginning to look like a green house in here." He told her.

"Yeah, the wildflowers are from Luke and the gardenias are from your father."

"What?" Nicholas gasped. He was pale as a sheet and looking at her as though she were crazy.

"Jax told me they were from my brother, he said the card..."

"Your brother? You mean Stefan?"

"Yes, Stefan, your father."

Nicholas looked extremely relieved as he explained the truth of the situation to her.

"Stefan is my uncle, not my father."

"Oh, I'm sorry. It's just when Jax told me I had a brother and a nephew I assumed..."

"It's okay. My father passed away when I was very young, in many ways I do think of Stefan as my father."

"So then your real father was my other brother."

"Yes."

"So I have two brothers, any other family Jax didn't fill me in on?" She asked curiously, beginning to feel Luke had been right when he said she was receiving the edited version.

"Um, Tony said he was giving you good news, does it have to do with your memory?"

"Yes, he thinks that I'll regain it once the swelling in my brain goes down." She told him, fully aware that he was changing the subject but not wanting to push.

"That's great."

"Yeah, so tell me about yourself. Do you have a girlfriend, a job?"

"Yes to both. Actually I have a fiancee, Gia."

"And the job?"

"I run some family interests." He told her not sure she would be able to handle the "I'm a prince" answer.

"Oh." Okay so Nicholas was also hiding something from her. It seemed as though every person she talked to was holding something back, editing their answers. Well almost everyone.

"Nicholas, do you know Luke Spencer?"

"Luke? Yeah I know Luke, he's sort of my stepfather." He told her though he honestly didn't often think of Luke in those terms.

"Wow, is there anyone in this town who isn't somehow related to every other person in town?" Alexis asked, causing Nicholas to laugh.

"Have you met Zander yet?"

"Briefly."

"Well he's about the only one. Why do you want to know about Luke?"

"He came by earlier and I got the feeling he knew me pretty well, he claimed we were friends."

"You and Luke? Well I guess, you are kind of friends, though I've never understood it."

"Apparently neither does anyone else. Do you have his phone number?"

"Why?" Nicholas asked looking upset again.

"I'd like to talk to him."

"Do you really think that's a good idea?"

"Why not?"

"Well because Luke is... Luke has some definite ideas about things and I wouldn't want you to base any... ideas on what he says."

"I'm perfectly capable of coming up with my own ideas."

"All right." He agreed reluctantly writing down Luke's number for her.

"I should probably let you get some more rest."

"Um Nicholas?"

"Yes?"

"Do you know a man named Sonny?"

"Sonny?"

"Yeah, I heard someone mention him."

"He's the local crime lord." He told her carefully noting her reaction.

"Are you sure?"

"He's a thug Alexis, you've been trying to put him in prison since you became DA." He told her and she could tell he was angry though he smiled and told her he'd see her soon.

Alexis went over the information and realised nothing was adding up. She and Jax were the perfect couple, but they had divorced. Jax was purposefully not telling her about their marriage or his current marriage. She had a dead brother that no one wanted to talk about, and possibly other family members as well judging from Nicholas' reaction to her questions. The local crime lord had stopped by to check up on her and seemed genuinely concerned. And no one seemed to know anything about her friendship with Luke.

It was enough to make a girl wonder just what kind of a life she had, who she was. Well she had had enough. It was time to get some answers and she knew just where to get them.
