Jax decided that at moments such as this the truth was the only way to go.
"Alexis and I are going to have a baby."
"You're having a baby? Together?" He sounded shocked and just a little too close to angry.
"That's what I said." Jax assured him, trying not to be offended by his tone.
"I didn't realize the two of you were... seeing each other."
"Yeah it took us by surprise too but we couldn't be happier."
"Well congratulations," Ned said embracing Alexis rather awkwardly.
"Thank you," she replied uncomfortably.
The two stood in an awkward silence until Kristina interrupted them.
"Maybe we should get going," she suggested as she pulled Ned towards the door, see you guys later.
As soon as Kristina closed the door Jax turned to Alexis, "Are you mad at me?"
"Why would I be mad at you?"
"For telling Ned."
"I wasn't planning to keep it a secret from people, Jax. It should be fairly obvious in a month or two anyway. " She pointed out as she sat down on the sofa. Jax followed and sat down beside her, determined to finish their conversation.
"Ned isn't people Alexis, he's the man you were going to marry."
"What does that have to do with anything.
"I was wondering... Never mind?"
"Jax!"
"Do you wish the baby was Ned's?"
Alexis took a minute before replying, not because she needed to ponder the question but because she couldn't believe he was actually asking it. "I loved Ned, very much. A part of me will always love him, but I am in love with you and I am so happy and so proud to be carrying your child, our child. She took his hand in hers and placed it over their growing child, I could never regret anything about this baby."
Jax looked into the eyes of the woman he loved who was carrying his child and he was filled with an overwhelming desire. He leaned forward, his thumb moving to touch her lips, stroking it across them until she could no longer stand the sweet torture. He paused for just a moment before his lips replaced his thumb. The kiss was slow and deep, it was all but impossible for Alexis to think clearly. She did register the feel of his hands as they moved down the length of her back, and gently positioned her so that she could feel his desire. "If you want me to stop you really need to tell me now," he had to make sure though he wasn't sure how he would stop himself if she asked. Thankfully Alexis had no desire for him to stop. Instead she reached over and undid the first button of his shirt, then the second.
"I think you're far too overdressed." It was the only sign he needed. Quickly lifting her in his arms he headed towards the stairs. "Jax put me down, you'll break your back." He smiled at her but continued up the stairs. Alexis didn't object, in fact she didn't object to anything Jax did that night.
Alexis woke up early that evening completely feeling more complete than she had in months. Jax's arms were wrapped around her while he kissed her neck. Suddenly he jumped out of bed. "Oh, I forgot I bought something for you." He headed downstairs to get it, completely oblivious to his nudity. Alexis could only hope that Kristina was still out with Ned. Since she didn't hear any screams she assumed she was. Jax came back upstairs a minute later and handed Alexis a book.
"One Thousand And One Baby Names?"
"I figure it's never too early to start thinking about it." He explained looking slightly embarrassed.
"Jabir?"
No"
"Jeb?"
"No"
"Joost?"
"Alexis you've said no to every name."
"Do you really want to name our child Joost?" She asked as a smile crept over her mouth.
"Well you're the one who insisted it had to start with a J. I don't see why we can't pick another letter, after all there are 25 others to choose from."
"No this baby is a Jax and I want it to have everything that goes along with that, including a name that begins with J."
"Does that mean you might consider becoming a Jacks again yourself? He asked lightly though he was very serious.
"What about Jasper Junior?" Though he knew she was just trying to change the subject he couldn't help but respond.
"Alexis, have you ever wondered why I go by Jax?
"It's short and easy to remember?" She suggested playfully.
"I don't like the name Jasper."
"Well I think it's cute." Now desperate to change the subject himself Jax suggested they look at girl's names.
"Jorja?
"I thought that was spelled with a G?"
"According to the book it can go either way. Do you like it?"
"Yeah it's kind of sweet. What else you got?"
"Jillian?"
"Hmm."
"Jessica."
"Hmm."
"Julia?"
"No!"
"Does your rather emphatic refusal have anything to do with Julia Barrett?"
"No I just don't like the name," she lied and Jax laughed.
"Alright so it's decided then, Jorja if its a girl and anything but Jasper if it's a boy."
"Hey, I object."
"Overruled," he replied getting out of bed and reaching for his pants. "Come on lets go get some food, I think Jorja's hungry." Alexis waited until after she got her robe on to reply.
"You know now that you mention it I think Jasper is hungry."
Since he already had a bag at her place Jax stayed the night, then he stayed the next night. Soon he brought a bag of his stuff over, then another. Within the next month he had basically moved in.
Alexis could hear Jax reenter the bedroom but she remained under the sheet pretending to be asleep. She had been working less and slept in whenever possible. "I know you're awake," he called out playfully. She didn't move. "Alexis?" Still nothing. " Okay I guess I'll have to eat the french toast myself." He threatened pretending to leave the room.
"I'm up, I'm up," she called reaching eagerly for the tray Jax was carrying.
"That's my girl." Jax laughed handing her the tray and giving her a quick kiss. He was dressed in a business suit and obviously on his way out. "I've got a busy day planned but are you free for dinner?"
"Sure, did you have any place special in mind?'
"Actually I did." He replied but said no more.
"Well, are you going to tell me?"
"Nope. See you later." He gave her another quick kiss before heading out the door. She called after him but he was already gone.
After breakfast Alexis headed downstairs and ran into Kristina who was on her way out.
"Hey did you enjoy your breakfast? I saw Jax heading up with the tray earlier, that man really is too good to be true." Alexis wasn't about to argue. "He said something about the two of you going out tonight?"
"Yeah, he's taking me to dinner but he won't tell me where."
"Hmm."
"What?"
"Nothing.."
"No there was definitely something behind that hmm."
It's just that suspicious lawyer's mind of yours."
"Kristina!"
"Okay, okay, I was just thinking that its been awhile since the last time he proposed, maybe he's up for another round." Jax had proposed to Alexis at least once a week over the last two months but it had now been almost two weeks since his last proposal. She wanted to say yes but something held her back. She was afraid, afraid of something she couldn't quite name but she had a feeling it was the same thing that had caused her to flag down a semi a year and a half earlier.
