Jax caught Alexis just before she hit the ground and lifted her unconscious body into his arms.
"Alexis? Sweetheart can you hear me?" She was so pale and still Jax quickly laid her on the sofa and once more tried to wake her. This time she began to open her eyes.
The first thing Alexis saw when she opened her eyes, was the anxious face of the man she loved.
"Jax? What happened?"
"You passed out," he told her, obviously still worried. "How do you feel?"
"I'm fine," she stated beginning to get up but she was hit with another wave of dizziness and quickly laid back down.
"That's it, you stay here I'm getting a doctor."
"Jax you don't need to..."
"Alexis you just passed out and you're still dizzy, something is obviously wrong."
"No it's not, I'm fine I'm just..."
"Just what... Alexis if something is wrong you need to tell me. Are you ill?" She knew the time had come and so she told him at last.
"I'm pregnant."
Jax looked at her silently with a blank face until she was convinced he hadn't heard her. Then suddenly a grin began to form and within seconds he was smiling at her as though she'd given him the world.
"We're having a baby." He said leaning towards her and taking her into his arms. He kissed her, gently at first, but before long they were both carried away by their passion. His fingers began to search out her dress' zipper easing it slowly down until... they heard what sounded like a cough.
"Excuse us son, we just wanted to make sure everything is all right and obviously it is so we'll go back to the party."
"No wait," Jax said suddenly remembering how worried he had been a few minutes ago. "I need you to get Mark." Alexis looked at Jax questioningly. "He's a doctor; I want him to check you out."
"Is something wrong dear?" Lady Jane asked sounding anxious.
"I just felt a little dizzy, I'm fine." Alexis tried to reassure her.
"You're not fine, you passed out and I want to know why."
"You're being way too protective."
"I think I have a right to be," he stated unknowingly letting his gaze fall to Alexis' stomach.
"Oh good you've told him about the baby." Jax looked up at him mother then to Alexis.
"You told my mother before you told me?"
"I'm going to get Mark, John stated as he fled the room.
"I didn't tell her, she guessed." Alexis defended herself.
"Really Jax the poor girl has been up sick every morning, I should think you would have noticed." Jax was instantly worried.
"You've been sick?"
"Just morning sickness, I'm fine," she reassured him again. "I think I'm going to have that tattooed on my forehead "I'm fine" that way you won't have to ask me every five minutes. Of course that would probably be painful, maybe I'll just make a sign, I could wear it around my neck..."
"Alexis."
"What?" Before Jax could answer John reentered the room with Mark in tow.
"John said you need a doctor, what's wrong?"
"Alexis fainted; I want you to make sure she's okay. She's pregnant," he added.
"Congratulations."
"Thank you," Alexis replied. "And thank you for agreeing to check me over but there's really no need. I temporarily lost consciousness because certain people" she glared at Jax, "enjoy dropping great big bombshells of information on me with little to no warning and that tends to have an adverse reaction to my ability to breath."
Mark looked to Jax, "Translation?"
"I told her I love her, she passed out."
"Glad to see you still have a way with the ladies," Mark laughed.
"Oh shut up Mark, I need you to make sure she's okay."
"Hello I already told you..."
"You're fine, yes I know but I'd like to have it confirmed by a professional."
"I think I'm qualified to judge whether of not I'm all right." She stated stubbornly.
"How about a compromise? Mark shouted slightly. Both turned to him surprised having at least temporarily forgotten he was there. Convinced he now had their attention Mark continued. "I'll ask Alexis a couple questions, check her pulse, and blood pressure, and if everything is normal we'll forgo the complete exam, agreed?" "Fine by me." "Okay."
"Great." Mark stated with evident relief. "We better go check on the party guests, before they come looking for us." John said leading Lady Jane back towards the ballroom.
Five minutes later it was over. Jax was pacified and Alexis was satisfied with the knowledge that she was right, both she and the baby were fine.
"Thank you Mark, I appreciate this."
"No problem Jax, like I said you're a luck man." With that he excused himself and went back to the party.
"Alone at last." Jax stated coming to sit next to her on the sofa.
"You were the one who insisted Mark stay," she reminded him.
"Well I had to make sure you were all right."
"I know and honestly I am happy to know for sure."
"Am I losing it or did Alexis Davis just admit that she was wrong and I was right?"
"You must be losing it because I said no such thing."
"Come on admit it, I was right. Say it, just this once. I won't tell anyone." He began to tickle her until she had no choice but to give in.
"Fine, she began, slightly out of breath, "on this one occasion you were right."
"Thank you, now what will you give me?"
"For what?"
"For being right."
"What do you want?"
The words were out before he could stop them. "Marry me."
