Step Seven- Just Friends

I think I should begin by pointing out that timing has never been one of my strong suits. I think I should begin by pointing out that timing has never been one of my strong suits. The man I love asks me to be his friend again and I blurt out I'm pregnant? On a side note I have to say it's a little ironic that the man who teases me relentlessly about my breathing hasn't taken a breath in about two minutes. He looks like he's about to pass out. At least he knows now, which allows me to begin step seven, distancing myself from him. I know he'll want to be a part of the baby's life and I can deal with that. I can't however deal with the idea of getting close to him again and then losing it all. No, he asked for friendship and that's what he'll get, no more, no less.

"Sonny, maybe you should try inhaling a little oxygen."

"You're pregnant? We're having a baby?" The expression on his face is nearly enough to completely crumble my resolve. Nearly, but not quite.

"I never said anything about it being yours."

"Alexis, I am not a complete idiot, despite the way I've been acting. I know you're carrying my child. I can't believe it, I bet it's a girl."

"Actually this week I've decided it's a boy." Okay so I'm being argumentative on purpose, sue me.

"This week?"

"Yeah I rotate the gender about once a week."

"Don't you think that will confuse the kid?"

"Sony, the kid is barely the size of a golf ball I highly doubt he's capable of conscious thought."

"Alexis, this is you we're talking about, your eggs are probably capable of conscious thought."

"Obviously not." I never could resist a well-placed barb.

"There's no reason to get nasty. If you want it to be a boy, I'll go along for now. Hello in there, Son... ny Jr."

"Wait a minute, there is no way I'm naming my son Sonny."

"Why not?"

"Because Sonny Davis sounds like country singer."

"Well that won't be a problem since his last name is Corinthos. Now come on and get dressed."

"What?"

"I'm taking you out to celebrate."

"Where?" I realize he's changing the subject but I decide to let it go. Besides we do deserve to go out and celebrate, as friends of course.

"The Casino?" He suggests.

"You want to take me gambling?"

"Yes, I'm suddenly feeling very lucky." Kate was right, it's the dimples.

"Fine but give me time to get ready."

"Great, I'll be back at seven." He kisses my cheek as he leaves. It's a friendly kiss, nothing wrong with that. Except of course the fact that the touch of his lips on my skin makes me remember the night we spent together. The feel of his hands and his tongue as he... Oh god, get dressed and get your mind off Sonny. Good luck.

By seven I am dressed, my hair is up, only because it's hot out. It has absolutely nothing to do with the visual I keep getting of Sonny taking it down and running his fingers through it as he... Thank god, a knock at the door.

"You look amazing." He says as soon as I open the door. I notice him looking at my stomach where our child is just beginning to make his presence known.

"You don't look too bad yourself."

"Shall we?"

As we head downstairs I begin to wonder just what Sonny has in mind for tonight. So far he's taken the news about the baby very well, too well. The Sonny I know would never be able to just leave it at that. He must have something else up his sleeve.

An hour later I was still wondering what Sonny had planned. We had dinner during which I told him about the doctor's appointments I had had and the various things I was doing to get ready for the baby. He listened, barely speaking at all. Then he suggested we play a few games at the tables. I tried a few different games before ending up at the roulette table.

"Do you remember?" He asked.

"Four black. Do you think it will work?"

"Only one way to find out." I moved my hand to put down the chip but Sonny took it in his and held it until I looked up at him. "Would you be interested in a personal side bet?"

"Such as?" I was gambling, in more ways than one.

"Marry me."

"Excuse me."

"If it lands on four black, marry me."

"Sonny I am not going to leave my future to the spin of a roulette wheel."

"Come on Alexis, don't you believe in fate and destiny.

"Sonny, I'm Greek, fate and destiny don't exactly have a history of kindness towards my people."

"What about you personally? After all it was fate that brought us together."

"No, actually it was a hundred dollar bill that brought us together." Okay the several people eavesdropping on this conversation now think I'm a prostitute.

"I mean my fee," I clarify and realize I've made the situation worse when Sonny laughs.

"I'm a lawyer," I practically yell, which only makes Sonny laugh harder. "This is hardly the way to make me say yes," I glare at him.

"Does that mean you're thinking about it?"

"Well that depends. When and where would said marriage take place?" Okay I seem to have lost my brain, what the hell am I doing?

"Tonight, and here."

"You want to get married here, tonight?"

"Well we could have a big church wedding if you want but I figured you weren't into that, especially after Ashton."

"Sonny I can't just marry you, I mean... I don't do marriage."

"You married Jax."

"I wasn't in love with Jax."

"So you are in love with me, I knew it." His grin is just a little too cocky for my taste.

"Wait a minute I never said that."

"Then you're not in love with me, and therefore you should have no problem marrying me."

"What?"

"Well either you're in love with me and therefore we can't get married because you only marry people you're not in love with. Or you're not in love with me, just like you weren't in love with Jax and therefore there's no problem with us getting married."

"Sonny that was different, that was to help Chloe."

"And our child isn't as important to you as a fashion company?"

"Of course he is."

"Fine then answer the question, are you in love with me or are we getting married?"

"Okay I admit it, I'm in love with you." There see how he likes that.

"Good. Now Alexis Davis who has just admitted in front of a room full of witnesses that you love me, will you marry me?"

"But I thought..." Damn he tricked me. Well two can play at that game. Leaning towards him I whisper in his ear.

"I'll marry you if the wheel lands on anything other that four black."

I can see him frown. I know him too well, well enough to know he wouldn't bet unless it was a sure thing. Now I've changed the rules and Sonny looks decidedly nervous. Taking my chip and placing it on four black, I keep one eye on Sonny to make sure he is not doing anything to fix the game. Round and round the wheel goes spinning and spinning until finally it stops, on red 23. The crowd moans with disappointment, unaware of the deal I made with Sonny, he on the other hand couldn't look more pleased.

"You did something," I accuse him.

"Nope. So do you want an indoor or outdoor wedding?"

"Sonny this is not funny."

"I've never been more serious in my life Alexis."

Half an hour later I'm back in my room once again on the phone.

"Hello."

"Kate, it's me."

"How's Paradise?

"I told him."

"And?"

"He was thrilled. He said he'd been an idiot, I agreed. We fought over the gender, the time at which a fetus gains the ability to think, and names for the baby, had dinner, went gambling, had an extremely public verbal sparring match in the casino and well... we're getting married in an hour. Kate stop laughing!"
