Once again I find myself in a situation I was not expecting. Actually "not expecting" is putting it far too mildly. Had someone told me a week ago that I would be in Puerto Rico with Sonny I would have checked them into Ferncliff. It all began yesterday shortly after I had begun to implement step six of my plan, rest and relaxation. I had cleared my schedule for two weeks with the intention of going on a vacation, and then Sonny happened. He came into my penthouse uninvited and told me that he needed my help. Why on earth can't I say no to those dimples? Anyway here I sit in a luxurious suite dialing the only person who might be able to help me figure this out.
"Hello."
"Kate, hi."
"Hi, so did you finally decide where to go on your vacation?"
"Actually I'm in Puerto Rico."
"Wow, that was fast, what did you do hire a private jet?"
"Close actually we flew down here on Sonny's jet."
"We as in you and the baby or we as in you and a certain Cuban cutie?"
"Kate please, I need help."
"Okay, start from the beginning."
"Sonny came to my penthouse yesterday and said he needed my help to straighten out some stuff in Puerto Rico."
"And of course you agreed? It was the dimples, wasn't it?"
"Kate."
"Fine but didn't you tell him you were on vacation?"
"Yes, he claimed Puerto Rico was the perfect getaway."
"Well, it is..."
"Kate I'm looking for help here."
"Okay so where are you staying, are you at least near the beach?"
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"Well if he claimed it was a working vacation he should at least put you up by the beach."
"We're staying in the rooms over his casino, it's right on the beach."
"Oh."
"Oh what?"
"You really don't want to hear this."
"Kate."
"Fine, Alexis you are in a luxury hotel in Paradise with a rich gorgeous incredibly sexy man who is the father of your child. Have you ever thought this might not be a problem so much as an opportunity?"
"An opportunity for what?"
"To tell him he's the father of your child."
"Kate I can't just... sexy huh?"
"Alexis I'm married not blind. The man has a body that would make most women go a little wild."
"Kate."
"Hey your the one you who slept with him."
"But I didn't..."
"Enjoy it? Right Alexis, I'm sure it was torture."
"Wait a second I think room service is knocking. Come in. Sonny."
"Sonny as in Sonny just walked into the room?"
"Yes that would be correct."
"Okay Alexis remain calm, there's no way he knows what we were talking about."
"Just a minute Sonny. I need to go, I'll talk to you later."
"Have fun and don't do anything I wouldn't do, if I weren't a happily married woman that is."
"Shut up."
"Is that any way to talk to the woman who knows all your secrets?"
"I've got to go."
"Yeah, give my love to Sonny, or better yet give him yours."
"Goodbye Kate."
"Bye."
"So that was your friend who just had the baby?" Sonny asks me as soon as I hang up the phone. He's made himself comfortable on the sofa. I think I'll remain standing, it's safer.
"Yeah."
"How is the baby doing?"
"Good, they named her Emma."
"That's sweet, I always wanted a... um I'm glad she's doing well."
"Sonny there's something I need to tell you." What am I doing?
"Yes?"
Think, think...
"I have a problem with the wording on one of the contracts."
"Alexis, don't worry about the contracts, you're down here to relax."
"I'm down here as your attorney."
"Yes, but only during business hours. We agreed you would take time off to relax while we're down here. After all I did pull you away from your vacation to come down here, the least I can do is make sure you enjoy yourself." Once again the dimples are out in full force.
"What did you have in mind?" Did I just say that? Oh my god I'm flirting. Stop this. "Sonny you don't owe me anything, well except my large but justified fee."
"You are the best."
"Yes I am."
"Can we... um... can I talk to you about something." Okay, this is serious, he sounds nervous, and Sonny never sounds nervous. Well unless he's just committed a crime that he needs my help to get out of.
"Oh no, what did you do?"
"Alexis could you sit, please."
"Great, this must be bad. All right I'm sitting. Now what did you do?"
"I made the worst mistake of my life."
"Sonny should I be expecting Taggert to walk through the door with a warrant at any minute?"
"What? No. Alexis what I did wasn't illegal, just stupid. Can you just listen and not talk till I'm finished." Does this man know me at all?
"I'll try."
"Okay. Alexis when Carly came back..."
"Carly? You want to talk about Carly?" There is no way in hell I'm going to sit here and listen to him lament about his on again off again crazy slut of a wife.
"No, yes, please just listen. Okay forget Car... Let's talk about you, about us."
"Us?"
"Alexis." He says warningly. I forgot, I promised to stay quiet.
"Sorry."
"Anyway you know what kind of a man I am Alexis. You know what I've done in the past, things I'm not proud of. For a long time I thought that the money and the power I had was all that was important. And then you came into my life. You know the first time I saw you I was impressed, it takes a lot to impress me. Then you became my lawyer and I got to know you, eventually we became friends, best friends I think. Do you know what your friendship has meant to me? I've told you things I've never told anyone, you're the first woman in my life I trust without question, the first person actually. But then we got closer and I got scared.
"Of what?"
"You. Alexis do you know what I see when I look at you? You're beautiful, smart, funny, elegant, classy, you're everything I can never have." His voice broke slightly as he spoke.
"Sonny."
"No please let me finish. You went to Harvard, you have traveled the world, and you're a princess for god's sake. And what am I? An uneducated, ex-strip club owner. I could never have a woman like you Alexis, I realized that a long time ago but I need to say this and I need you to listen. I'm in love with you. I have been for... well let's just say it's been a while. When we made love I thought maybe that we would... Well anyway then Carly came back and you told me to go back to her. I figured you regretted what had happened, I mean you refused to even talk about it. You kept distancing yourself from me until we didn't even have our friendship anymore. That's why I'm telling you this, that's why Carly and I split up. When you told me to go back to her I thought I could do that and we could still have our friendship."
"So did I but she made it impossible for me to be near you."
"I realize that Carly did not make those weeks easy on you. And I'm sorry Alexis, I'm sorry for so much of what I did but I'm willing to make it up to you and I promise somehow I will. That's why I told you all this I needed you to understand. You mean everything to me, I need you in my life and so I'm asking you to give me another chance. If nothing else at least allow me to be your friend. The guy who will make you coffee so you don't have to drink your own and dinner so you don't starve. That's all I'm asking for Alexis. Alexis? You can talk now. Please say something."
"I'm pregnant."
