Chapter 9

Jax and Alexis were the last ones to arrive at the meeting. As they walked into the room they were greeted with many speculative looks. It was only then that Alexis realized she was still holding Jax's hand. She let go quickly which brought on even more questioning looks. She thought she had seen a look of hurt in Sonny's eyes but he turned the other way before she could be certain.

''Alexis this is a surprise,''

Danniel stated stepping forward away from Skye. His tone implied that he fully expected her to be halfway out of the country by now.

''I asked Alexis to come look over the contracts, I hope you don't mind.'' Ned asked wondering exactly how Danniel and Alexis knew each other.

''On the contrary I'm delighted.''

''How exactly do you two know each other?'' asked Edward who was as curious as Ned but not as subtle.

''We're old friends, from New York. I was hoping to catch up with you the other night but then Laura dragged you away with family business I believe.''

''How did you...'' Alexis began but Danniel finished the question for her.

''Know it was Laura? I met her on the island in Greece.''

''I thought you said you knew Alexis from New York?'' Asked Ned wondering exactly what Danniel's connection to the Cassadines was.

''I do know Alexis from New York, we never met in Greece.''

There was something in the way he said the last part that was almost regretful.

''Well thats enough personal talk lets get down to business.'' Edward stated uncomfortable with the knowledge of Danniel's Cassadine connection.

Alexis was able to keep her mind off Danniel during the next hour by concentrating on the contracts. Soon Edward announced that the board members would retire into the other room to vote on the new deal. This would of course leave Alexis and Danniel together alone in the room. Jax lingered behind the others. Taking Alexis' hand once more he kissed her on the cheek

''Do you need to get back to the office, you can take my car if you like.'' He was offering her a way out and she knew it.

''No I'll wait here for you to finish.''

''Okay I'll see you in a few minutes.'' Jax hated to leave her alone with this man but there was nothing else he could do.

''He seems very devoted.'' Danniel said sarcastically as soon as Jax had left the room.

''He's been a good friend to me.'' she said automatically defending Jax.

''And a good husband?''

''Yes as a matter of fact he was.'' Alexis stated knowing it was the truth.

''Yet you divorced him.''

''Helena really did fill you in on my life didn't she.''

''I'm not going to discuss Helena with you.'' He suddenly sounded angry.

''I don't want to discuss anything with you so why don't we just not talk.''

''Dammit why do you have to be so stubborn?'' he asked sounded absolutely frustrated. ''I didn't come here to hurt you.'' he said sofly hoping she would talk with him.

''Coming from you I find that hard to believe.''

''Coming from me you wouldn't believe that the earth is round.''

''Are you trying to say my distrust of you is unjustified?''

''Of course not, he answered sounding tired. ''I lied to you, I hurt you, but dammit you didn't even give me a chance to explain.''

''You couldn't explain what you did. Alexis too sounded tired.

''Because I lied?''

''Yes.''

''And the truth is so important''

''Yes!'' Neither of them realized how loud they're voices were becoming.

''Then why did you lie to me?'' Danniel shouted. ''Why did you tell me our child was dead?''
