Chapter 10

"What?" The look of shock on Alexis, face was unmistakable.

"You didn't think I knew did you?" Danniel seemed to delight in catching her off guard.

"I don't..."

"Did you really think I wouldn't find out?" He yelled at her, again not giving her a chance to answer. "Did you think you could hide her away and I wouldn't know what you did?"

Danniels voice could now be heard throughout the house including the room where the boardmembers had just begun to vote. Jax shot out of the room with the others close behind. They entered the room to find Alexis close to tears and Danniel continuing his tirade.

"How could you do this to me?"

"I didn't do anything to you." Alexis said finally interupting him.

Neither of them noticed the crowd in the doorway. Before anyone could alert them of their presense the group was stunned into silence.

"I never lied to you." Alexis stated firmly.

"No, not techniqually. When I asked you what happened to our child you told me it was gone, I assumed you meant you had miscarried, I didn't realize you gave it away."

"I didn't..." Alexis began to deny but again Danniel cut her off.

"You gave our child away and never looked back. At least not until a couple weeks ago when you suddenly showed up with a child that you claimed was the daughter of friends."

"She was the daughter of my friends."

"Oh yes I know, but not their biological child, the Whitneys adopted Jillian when she was two months old, an adoption which you helped to arrange. I know all about it. I went to the hall of records to get a copy of her birth certificate but I was told the records were sealed. Who's signature was on the legal document to seal the records? Why none other than one, Alexis Davis. Why did you do it Alexis, were you afraid that Helena would hurt the child or did you just not want her?"

"You bastard you have no idea what you're talking about." Alexis turned to get away from him and saw for the first time the group of shocked individuals standing just beyond the door. The looks on their faces were too much for Alexis to handle. She ran past them and out of the house. It was only once she got outside that she realized she had no car, having come over with Jax. She saw Sonnys car and decided to take a chance. Johnny who was sitting inside waiting looked mildy surprised when Alexis jumped in the back beside him.

"Um Sonny said I could borrow the car, I need to get home for a meeting."

Johnny quickly told the driver to take off. Alexis, her mind racing over the events of the morning began to have difficulty catching her breath.

"Are you okay Miss Davis?" Johnny asked looking worried.

"Yes... I'm ...fine." Alexis spoke between gasps, suddenly she felt dizzy.

"Here put your head down" Johnny directed hoping that she wouldn't pass out. How on earth would he explain an unconscious attorny in the back seat to Sonny.

"I'm fine." Alexis assured him again this time sounding only slightly more convincing.

When they reached the Port Charles Towers Johnny helped Alexis upstairs and then into her apartment. Kristina saw them come in together and was concerned.

"What happened?" Before anyone could answer Johnny's cell phone rang.

"Where thye hell is the car?" Sonny yelled sounding impatient.

"Um we drove Miss Davis home boss... like you said." Johnny noticed a look of guilt on Alexis' face and realized he had been taken for a ride, literally.

"Like I... never mind is Alexis okay."

"I think so but she almost passed out in the car, hey!" Johnny yelled as Alexis kicked him.

"What's going on?"

"Nothing boss everything's fine." he stated rubbing his shin. "I aleady sent the car back for you it should be there any minute."

"Good, do me a favour don't leave until I get there and don't let anyone else in the apartment." Sonny couldn't help remember the look of absolute rage in Danniel Marriks eyes when he stormed out of the room soon after Alexis had.

"Sure boss."

"Thanks." As soon as Johnny hung up the phone Alexis began to apologize.

"I'm sorry about tricking you into stealing the car."

"You stole Sonny's car?" Kristina gasped.

"I borrowed it, without asking." Alexis explained.

Suddenly she remembered why she had borrowed the car.

"Where is Jillian?"

"Upstairs wrapping the presents we bought, why?"

"I've decided we're going to go on a trip." Alexis answered trying to sound excited.

"What?"

"For Christmas, I thought we could go to Italy, have you ever been to Italy? Jax and I went there on our honeymoon, of course we spent most of it with other people but still it was wonderful, very pretty..."

"Alexis stop it. What on earth is going on with you?"

"Nothing I just think this would be a good time for a vacation that's all."

"That's not all now tell me what's wrong."

"I can't. Don't you see I can't tell anyone... I should have known it wouldn't work I should have known it was too late. Did I really think I could be a mother, that I could protect her?" Alexis was obviously asking herself these questions, she seemed have forgotten Kristina was there.

"Alexis is this about Jillian? Is she in danger?"

"Please Kristina just go upstairs and help her pack, I'll be up in a minute." Alexis sounded defeated and it scared Kristina. Not wanting to upset her anymore she went upstairs.

Sonny arrived a few minutes later. She couldn't look at him, she knew what he was thinking. She was just like Mike in his eyes. He believed that she had abandoned her child just as his father had left him.

"Alexis? Are you okay?"

"I'm sorry for taking your car I didn't..."

"I don't care about the car," he interrupted her. "I only care about you."

She looked at him for a moment not certain she had heard him correctly. Finally she answered him.

"Sonny you have been a wonderful friend to me even now when I know you don't want to be here, thank you, I'm fine."

''What do you mean I don't want to be here, why else would I be here?" He demanded.

"You're here because you are a good man and you care about those around you, even when they don't deserve it."

"Don't say that."

"It's true."

"No it isn't. Alexis you are the most compassionate, amazing woman I know and you deserve a hell of a lot better than me but I want you to know that I..."

"Mom have you seen my swimsuit? I don't want to go to Italy without it. Oh hi Sonny." Jillian continued as she came down the stairs. "Did Mom tell you we're going on a trip, we're leaving today, isn't it exciting."

Sonny looked at Alexis as though she had hit him.

"I'll be upstairs to help you look in a minute." Alexis said not taking her eyes off Sonny.

With that Jillian went back upstairs leaving Sonny and Alexis alone once more.

"You're running away?" He sounded angry.

"Sonny I can't..."

"Are you afraid of him?"

"What?"

"Are you afraid that he'll hurt you, or Jillian? I swear I'll protect you from him Alexis."

"You can't protect us from the truth. If we stay here things will happen that I can't control and Jillian will pay the price."

"What things? Everyone knows who she is now. What else is there?"

"Its not that simple."

"It never is but you can't run away from it Alexis. Stay here, fight for Jillian, I swear I'll help you in any way I can." Staring into Sonny's eyes Alexis began to believe that anything was possible.

"Jillian's going to be disappointed, she was looking forward to going on a trip."

"Tell her it's been postponed we'll go once we get this all straightened out." Alexis noticed that Sonny had invited himself on their future trip but she didn't complain. At this moment she could think of nothing better.

Meanwhile Danniel was sitting in his hotel room yelling into the phone.

"I must have rights, after all I'm the child's father. Yes I'm certain. Alright just take care of it, I want my daughter."
