Elizabeth froze at the top of the library stairs. That's from the poem, she thought, that's a line from the poem. Her heart was galloping. She looked around, expecting to see Tom Watts standing behind her.
But it wasn't Tom. If she'd thought about it, she would have known it wasn't Tom. The voice that recited that line didn't belong to him, it belonged to William White. William White, who was standing in the doorway only inches away. He was all in black and holding a white rose in his hand, as though he were a magician just pulling it from the air.
Unable to take her eyes from his, she stumbled for the right words. "I - I don't know what to say," she began. "I mean, thank you. Thank you for everything. For the flowers . . . for the poem . . . "
He touched the rose to her lips. "Thank you," he said.
