Suddenly a black Cadillac sedan shot out of an alley to the right of Jessica Wakefield's jeep, narrowly missing her and Nick Fox as it turned left in front of them.
"You maniac!" Jessica yelled at the other driver, but she couldn't see anyone clearly through the Cadillac's dark-tinted windows.
"Did you see . . ." she turned idignantly to Nick, only to find him slumped so far down in his seat that he was practically sitting on the floorboards. "What are you doing?" Jessica demanded, insulted. "That wasn't my fault, you know. That other car . . ."
"Shhh!" Nick interrupted, holding up one hand. "Are they following us?"
"Following us!" Jessica exclaimed. "Why would they . . ." Her sentance trailed off as she checked her rearveiw mirror. Somehow the sedan had managed to make a U-turn in the middle of the street and now it was right behind them. "Uh, yeah," she said, feeling her stomach suddenly tense. "I think they are."
"Oh, no," Nick groaned. "They saw me."
"Who saw you?" Jessica demanded. "And why are they following you?"
"It's some guys I knew in L.A." Nick tried to peek through the back of the Jeep without being seen himself. "You're going to have to lose them."
"Lose them?" Jessica laughed. "What for?"
"They kind of want to . . . kill me."
