The wind in her ears kept Elizabeth from hearing the Jeep until it had pulled up right alongside her. It was Ryan.
"What are you doing out here?" he shouted over the combined noices of the wind, the engine, and the crashing of the surf.
Elizabeth shrugged, trying to clear her head. "Thinking," she answered. She didn't have to say about what - from the set of his jaw she saw that he already knew.
"Yeah. Well, sometimes it's not a good idea to think too much."
"Ryan . . ." Elizabeth began, putting one hand over his on the stick shift. Ommediately, reflexitively, their fingers twined together. Elizabeth felt the same jolt of electricity she'd experianced the night they'd kissed as they squeezed each other's fingers hard. Then, just as suddenly, he dropped her hand.
"This is a bad idea," he said, his voice raw. "I thought you understood that."
"Maybe I do," Elizabeth admitted, "but I'd like to talk about it."
Ryan looked at her, then quickly looked away.
"I wouldn't," he said flatly.
