Steven tried to keep from shouting. "So let me get this straight . . . since you're entering the guitar competition, you hope to win it. Right? And if you win, you'll move to Spain. Right? And if you move to Spain, then obviously we're no longer together."
"Steven," Billie began with a catch in her voice.
"Right?" he repeated in a savage tone. "Answer me, Billie."
"This is my life. My life, Steven. Meaning it belongs to me. Billie Winkler. And I get to make some decisions about it," she shouted at the top of her voice.
Billie stood in front of Steven, red-faced with fury, tears of anger streaming down her cheeks. "So this is about you making a decision about breaking up and-"
"Who said anything about breaking up? she yelled.
He stared at her. "You're talking about leaving me," he said in a low, patient tone. "If you're on one continent and I'm on another, it's kind of hard to maintain a relationship."
"I knew you were going to react like this," she said angrily, reaching into her pocket for a tissue. "I can't talk to you about anything anymore."
"I'm out of here," Steven announced as he stormed out of their apartment.
